Cena za nejlepší poster

Naše postgraduální studentka Kateřina Kopalová zvítězila na mezinárodní konferenci v rakouském Innsbrucku s nejlepším posterem.

První místo ve studentské soutěži získala s posterem na téma "The genus Diadesmis in the Antarctic Region (Kopalová, K., Zidarova, R., Lowe, R. & Van de Vijver, B.)". Komise 6th Central European Diatom Meeting v Innsbrucku (březen 2012) hodnotila  vědecký obsah  a lay-out posteru. Katce srdečně blahopřejeme! Níže si můžete přečíst abstrakt jejího příspěvku.

The genus Diadesmis is one of the most abundant and species-rich genera in the entire Antarctic Region, mainly found in terrestrial and semiaquatic conditions. Most of the species in this genus are characterized by their small valve dimensions, uniseriate striae composed of one, usually elongated areola and a very simple raphe structure. When the genus was first erected in 1990 (Round et al. 1990), only seven species were included, subdivided into two subgenera, Diadesmis and Paradiadesmis (Rumrich et al. 2000), with Diadesmis contenta (Grunow ex Van Heurck) Mann ex Round et al. being the most well-known and widespread of all.
The past few years however, a large number of new species have been described worldwide, several of them presumably endemic to the Antarctic Region such as D. ingeae Van de Vijver, D. crozetikerguelensis Le Cohu & Van de Vijver or D. inconspicua Kopalová & Van de Vijver (Van de Vijver et al. 2002, Kopalová et al. 2009). During a recent survey of the diatom flora of several islands in the southern Atlantic and southern Indian Ocean, it was clear that the taxonomy of the genus Diadesmis needed a second revision.  While in the southern Indian Ocean the taxonomy of the Diadesmis species seemed to be rather well-defined, the status of most taxa in the southern Atlantic Ocean is much more uncertain with several taxa showing affinities but also differences to their southern Indian Ocean relatives.
This poster shows the most recent results on the diversity of this genus using detailed SEM observations. Several questionable taxa are discussed and a preliminary biogeography is suggested.
