Exploring the fitness consequences of whole-genome multiplication (WGM) is essential for understanding the establishment of autopolyploids in diploid parental populations, but suitable model systems are rare. We examined the impact of WGM on reproductive traits in three major cytotypes (2x, 3x, 4x) of Pilosella rhodopea, a species with recurrent formation of neo-autopolyploids in mixed-ploidy populations. We will show a strong efect of WGM on plant reproduction showing a trade off between sexual and vegetative reproduction. In addition to quantitative effect, WGM triggers the formation of new traits never observed in ancestral diploids, i.e. aposporous initials in the nucellus and root sprouting on roots. The second evolutionary novelety is a literally game-changer that allows establishment, persistance and spread of neoautopolyploids forming thus the largest primary diploid-autopolyploid contact zone ever recorded in angiopserms. We will discuss how WGM can instantly influence the formation of these traits through gene expression and phytohormones.
