Plant proteins provide a significant proportion of the total protein uptake consumed by humans per day. Most of this protein uptake derives from protein-rich storage organs, mainly seeds, where seed storage proteins (SSPs) serve as carbon, nitrogen, and sulphur sources and account for > 50% of total proteins. During germination and grain filling, the endomembrane system undergoes dynamic morphological changes to mobilize storage compounds and to accumulate SSPs.
Within our group, we will make a step change in our knowledge to understand the protein sorting and transport of SSPs during the caryopsis filling process. We apply a combination of molecular biological, cell biological, bioinformatic and biochemical approaches to investigate the endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT) machinery and its functional role in SSP transport in cereal endosperm. A strong focus of our group is to perform molecular and phenotypic analyses of barley development under conditions as near as possible to nature (#asnearaspossibletonature).
