Society for general microbiology - SOCIETY-SUPPORTED CONFERENCE GRANTS - do 15. 12. 2014

Awards of up to £2,000 are available to members who wish to organise a conference in any field of microbiology, either independently or in partnership with another Society.

Eligibility

Grants are available to current members of the Society who have made a minimum of two consecutive membership subscription payments.

What is covered by the grant?

Up to £2,000 will be awarded. Funds may be used towards the costs of funding invited speaker travel, accommodation, registration and subsistence. The Scientific Conferences Committee (SCC) will consider all applications.

Terms and conditions

Retrospective applications will not be considered.

The activity to be supported must be microbiological but any area of the discipline will be considered.

Grant recipients are expected to have adequate insurance and are responsible for arranging this.

Awards are made at the discretion of the Society and the decision of the award panel is final.

All claims must be substantiated by receipts or copies of invoices or other documents as appropriate.

No secretariat support is provided by the Society.

No support will be given to a conference or meeting that takes place at the same time as a Society Conference or covers a recent or soon to be held Society Conference topic.

No commitment to fund is given until the application has been reviewed by the SCC and written confirmation has been received by the applicant from the Society.

Speakers funded by the Society should be badged as such, within but not limited to the following: programme book, abstract book, website and opening slide of a funded-speaker presentation.

Printed materials, supplied by the Society, such as information on Society publications or upcoming conferences should be displayed.

Invited speakers must present for at least 30 minutes.

Funding for invited speaker costs will only be made up to the current publicised Society limits:

Geographic limits per half day of science (for UK based events)

  • A maximum of one speaker from the Rest of the World (ROW)
  • A maximum of one speaker from mainland Europe
  • A minimum of one speaker from the UK and Ireland

Travel expense allowances (for UK based events) including flights, ground travel and in-travel subsistence

  • UK and Ireland: up to a maximum of £150.00 in total
  • Mainland Europe: up to a maximum of £250.00 in total
  • USA/Canada (ROW): up to a maximum of £900.00 in total
  • ROW: up to a maximum of £1,200.00 in total

Accommodation and registration

  • Accommodation must be considered by the SCC to be of a reasonable cost
  • Five star hotels will not be funded
  • The number of nights available for funding are as follows

Subsistence

  • No allowance is given for B&B, refreshments, lunch or dinner where provided for in the registration fees
  • Where dinner is not provided, an allowance of up to £20 per night is allowed

Where the funding request exceeds £500, a minimum target of 50 delegates is sought.

Application process

Applications must be made on the appropriate form in advance of the conference or meeting.

There are two rounds of applications per year.

Awards are made by competition. Applications are reviewed by the members of the SCC.

Applicants should expect to receive notification of the outcome of their application within two months of the closing date.

Administration of awards

Funding will be awarded retrospectively and must be claimed on the claim form provided on confirmation of the grant being awarded.

Receipts are required in all instances.

Funds are paid by bank transfer.
