As in gonochorists, dioecious plants consist of male and female individuals. At the molecular level, the existence of separate sexes creates genomic conflict of needs and interests leading to evolution of sex chromosomes. Therefore, new balance in many regulatory processes has to be established. Is separation of males and females in plants a win-win strategy or a one-way ticket to extinction?
