Biology
Study programme Biology with the following study branches:

Animal Physiology
Students in the Animal Physiology branch, who have a general knowledge of biology and a basic knowledge of natural science (chemistry, physics), are schooled in the subject of physiology, with an emphasis on information about the mechanisms of physiological processes at the molecular and cellular levels as well as an organism's integrative physiological functions and their regulation. The theoretical as well as experimental background they receive is appropriate for work in basic or applied research, in a clinical setting, as well as in pharmaceutics. -
Anthropology and Human Genetics
Graduates are educated in physical anthropology, human anatomy and physiology, human ecology, the ontogenetic and phylogenetic development of man, human and molecular genetics, molecular diagnostics of inherited disorders, methodology of science and in fields of their specialization (ethology, forensic genetics, proteomics, teratology, endocrinology, biomedical technologies, etc). Applied methods include: anthropometry, roentgenometry, 3D morphometry and methods of molecular genetics, immunochemistry and biochemistry. They are prepared for careers as university teachers, research workers, specialists in criminology, forensic and clinical medicine, industrial and osteological anthropology, archeology, museum specialists, etc. -
Botany
Graduates of Botany at the Charles University of Prague are experts in plant biology and ecology. Their theoretical and practical knowledge is based on the field and experimental methods of plant science. Biosystematic and ecological approaches cover the main groups of plants, autotrophic and fungal microorganisms and their phylogeny, geography and ecology. There is a broad overlap of botany with other basic and applied sciences. Graduates often continue their scientific career in Ph.D. study. They occupy positions in plant and forest technology, nature protection, hygiene, regional development, water technology, ethnobotany, ecotoxicology, pharmacology, landscape management and restoration ecology. -
Cellular and Developmental Biology
The holder of this degree has knowledge of molecular cell biology, developmental biology, as well as areas related to the M.Sc. thesis topic. Study was focused on cell regulation in both uni- and multi-cellular organisms and on the manifestations and mechanisms of differentiation of cells and tissues in developing systems, including their pathology. The methodical and practical skills obtained include molecular genetics, biochemistry, genomics and proteomics, cell biology and developmental morphology. The graduate is prepared to work in the basic as well as applied sciences, and has the potential to continue in a doctoral programme. -
Ecology
The study plans expect that the applicants will have the basic ecological/biological education acquired during the bachelor study; please, consult the relevant recommended bachelor's study plans or the guarantor of the Ecology master's program. If needed, students can attend important Bachelor's degree courses during the Master's study to fulfil these requirements.
The study plan is designed to achievement of biological education with an emphasis on knowledge of interactions between organisms and between organisms and their environment, ranging from adaptations at the individual level and population dynamics to ecosystems and biosphere. It includes training in both field and experimental ecological work.
The Ecology Master's program has two specializations: Hydrobiology and Terrestrial Ecology:
The study plan in Hydrobiology focuses on practical and theoretical aspects of the field, particularly of limnology, the study of inland aquatic ecosystems. The study plan of Terrestrial Ecology focuses on all general aspects of ecology including molecular ecology and macroecology.Graduates of the program are able to use recent analytical approaches to quantitative ecological data. The graduate is well prepared for either highly demanding research work, including relevant PhD study, or for professional and methodical (but legislative) work, such as surveys, analyses or monitoring for state, public or commercial administrations.

Genetics, Molecular Biology and Virology
The student who has finished these studies has a deep knowledge of genetics, molecular biology and virology. Depending on the subject of his diploma thesis, he is a specialist in some specific area of these scientific branches (e.g. cytogenetics, molecular genetics and gene engineering, plant or animal genetics, genetics of microbes, molecular biology of microbes, molecular virology, etc.). He is experienced in the methods of molecular biology, biochemistry and cytogenetics. His comprehensive knowledge of genetics, molecular biology and virology make him useful to all kinds of biological research institutions, both theoretical and applied, and in biomedicine, in biotechnology, in specialized clinical laboratories, in institutions of plant, animal and microorganism breeding, in the microbiological industry, etc. -
Immunology
The graduate has a solid background in modern immunology, which ranges from theoretical molecular and cellular basics, through practical methodological aspects of experimental immunology, to the essentials of clinical immunology. In addition to having a specialized knowledge of immunology, in the strict sense of the word, he/she is also familiar with theoretical facts and basic practical experimental skills in the related fields of molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, and microbiology. After completing the diploma, he/she has a good practical command of the general principles of scientific work. Prospective careers: scientific research, clinical environment. -
Microbiology
The Master's of Science degree holder in microbiology gains a complex education in the field of cell and molecular biology of bacteria and yeasts, at the most current knowledge level. Graduates are skilled in basic microbiological, biochemical and analytical methods and in the techniques of molecular genetics. They are able to achieve new, original experimental results, evaluate them critically and publish them. Graduates are educated for work in both basic research, and in industrial, medical and environmental microbiology and biotechnology. They are qualified for a broad spectrum of professions; i.e. above all, in research institutions, in educational and health care systems, and in industry and administration. -
Parasitology
Graduates of the Master's degree program in parasitology have a thorough knowledge of parasitic organisms (parasitic protists, helminths and arthropods). Graduates are particularly familiar with parasite morphology, ecology, taxonomy and phylogeny, molecular biology, biochemistry and physiology, pathogenic effects, epidemiology and diagnostics. The study of parasitology meaningfully joins traditional (descriptive) and modern (experimental) approaches and emphasizes host-parasite interactions. Graduates are qualified for basic and applied research focused on parasitology and related disciplines (cell biology, immunology, microbiology, zoology). They can also work in universities, medical and veterinary diagnostic laboratories, and so on. Participation of students in international research projects can allow for future careers at institutions abroad. -
Experimental Plant Biology
The graduate has a general knowledge of structures and biological processes in the plant cell and body - architecture, metabolism, ontogenesis and its regulation, and interaction of the plant with the environment. The graduate can pursue his studies at the postgraduate level and continue in research work on the experimental biology of plants. Knowledge of plant physiology is applicable in practically-focused fields like agronomy, horticulture and breeding, forestry, phytopathology, plant biotechnology, ecology and environment protection, or in biology education at secondary schools (pedagogical training also needed). General practical experience in microscopic, biochemical and molecular biological methods, and a general biological knowledge enable work in other fields of biology, in a specialized commodity trade or in state administration. -
Theoretical and Evolutionary Biology
This study programme provides training for scientific work in the area of theoretical (mathematical or philosophical) reflection on biological data, and in the history of biology. Graduates can continue in postgraduate programs with similar contents. Graduates will get insights into areas related to problems concerning the evolution of life and its interpretation (mathematical, genetic, philosophical), the philosophy of life, the history and philosophy of biology, and similar boundary areas. They can become members of teams in the field of biology (processing and interpreting data) as well as in the humanities, where reflection on the hotspots of modern biology is often lacking. -
Zoology
Graduates in Zoology are able to observe or test animals in the field in the course of their systematic, anatomical, morphological, evolutionary and ecological studies. They design and perform laboratory experiments, and in some specializations use molecular and ethological methods. The data obtained are evaluated with a PC analysis. The zoology graduate can be employed in zoologically oriented institutes, including those that use applied science, at universities, museums and nature reserves. -
Protistology
Graduates are experts in diversity, ecology and evolutionary history of protists. They acquired knowledge of various microscopic and experimental biological methods (i.e. observation, cultivation and molecular analyses). They can analyse molecular data on phylogenetic and diversity structure of protists. Graduates can also routinely isolate and cultivate protist strains. Their skills include advanced microscopic methods, such as fluorescent and confocal microscopy, and various methods of electron microscopy. Graduates may continue their scientific careers in Ph.D. programmes or they can find jobs in biotechnology industries, hygiene, water technology, food industry or ecotoxicology. -

Analytical Chemistry
Analytical chemistry is the scientific discipline providing information on the chemical compositions of natural and man-made objects, and on their changes through space and time. Students of analytical chemistry obtain a theoretical and practical background in chemical and instrumental methods of analysis, chemometrics and approaches to securing quality, validation of methods, and laboratory accreditation. The number of chemical analyses per capita is one of the principal determinants of the degree of advancement of modern society. Therefore, graduates in analytical chemistry find ample opportunities in the development, optimization and verification of new procedures, and in the supervision of analytical practice and carrying out of analyses indispensable for research, industrial and agricultural production, and protection of the environment and human health. -
Biophysical Chemistry
A graduate of this discipline has theoretical as well as experimental knowledge and skills of all branches of chemistry, and a deep knowledge of biophysical chemistry and biochemistry and the interdisciplinary relations of these sciences. He/she also has a good knowledge of physics and mathematics and is experienced in working with computers and scientific literature and databases. The graduate is well-equipped to find a position in academic as well as industrial research teams, dealing with the discovery of new knowledge in the various fields of chemistry, biochemistry, bioengineering, pharmacology, ecology, biotechnology, etc., and with putting new, knowledge-based advanced technologies into practice. He/she can also find a position in the marketing of chemical products and chemistry-related instrumentation. -
Environmental Chemistry
The graduate has mastered university-level education in all disciplines of chemistry and other fields of science that give him/her ability to solve environmental chemistry problems. The master has both theoretical and practical skills in chemistry and related disciplines; his/her education allows participation in various teams of basic and/or applied research in the field of environmental chemistry. However, he/she is also competent to solve principle questions of environmental protection. During his/her work on the diploma thesis the graduate has acquired experience with research, ability to evaluate and construe results. He/she has become an environmental chemistry expert, who is able to judge chemical and also legal aspects of environmental pollution. -
Inorganic Chemistry
In addition to advanced inorganic chemistry, the graduate took courses in all branches of chemistry and also in the field of methods of syntheses and investigation of physico-chemical properties of inorganic and organometallic compounds and materials. On the basis of acquired theoretical and practical knowledge and skills, the graduate is able to solve problems concerning relations between structure, properties and reactivity of inorganic compounds with regard to their utilization, including their design and method of their syntheses. The graduate could find positions in both pure and applied laboratories of all branches of chemistry, especially, using his or her professional knowledge from the fields of inorganic materials, those dealing with catalysts for technological applications and synthesis of compounds suitable for utilization in medicine. -
Macromolecular Chemistry
The graduate in this discipline has theoretical as well as experimental knowledge, skills in all branches of chemistry and a deep knowledge of macromolecular science and a variety of interdisciplinary relations. He/she also has a good knowledge of physics and mathematics and is experienced in working with computers and scientific literature and databases. The graduate is likely to find a position on academic as well as industrial research teams, dealing with the creation of new knowledge in the various fields of the material sciences and engineering, catalysis, advanced pharmacological systems, ecology, etc., and with putting new, knowledge-based advanced technologies into practice. He/she can also find a position in marketing chemical products and chemistry-related instrumentation. -
Modelling of Chemical Properties of Nano- and Biostructures
This is an interdisciplinary study overlapping physical chemistry, biochemistry, and material science with the modern tools of molecular modelling. Graduates are able to solve problems of structural and dynamical aspects of complex systems using state-of-the-art tools of computational chemistry. Graduates will find use in various areas of science that includes: material engineering, pharmaceutical research, molecular biology, biotechnology and/or catalysis. Graduate will find positions either in applied research in private sector (pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies, chemical industry) or in academia. -
Organic Chemistry
Graduates of the MSc program in Organic chemistry have an advanced education in organic chemistry, mechanisms of organic reactions, determination of molecular structures, and separation methods. This knowledge is further expanded into the fields of naturally occurring compounds, organic physical chemistry, organic analysis, and chemical informatics. Graduates can find employment not only in institutes dealing with basic or applied research, but also in medical, pharmaceutical or ecological laboratories, as well as in technological praxis. -

The aim of this study programme is to prepare professional teachers (educators) who will have an advanced education in Chemistry with elements of Information and Communication Technology. Graduates also gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills in Pedagogy, Psychology and Education, particularly Chemical Education. An important part of the study is teaching practice. Graduates are fully qualified to teach Chemistry at high schools (secondary schools) and technical schools.

The graduate has acquired a basic and special theoretical knowledge and practical experience in all biochemical and molecular biological fields. The graduate is capable of undertaking research programs and presenting the results. Clinical and Toxicological Analysis
Graduates of the MSc program in Clinical and Toxicological Analysis have received interdisciplinary training in principles of chemistry, biochemistry, biology and pharmacy that permits them to head laboratories, observing good laboratory practice in the fields of clinical analysis and analyses of the food chain, and in the development, production and distribution of pharmaceuticals. They can evaluate the most important aspects of risks, legal consequences of analytical results and the effects of interactions of chemical compounds with the environment.

Cartography and Geoinformatics
The Master's degree graduate is focused on applied research, design and creation of both classic and digital maps and atlases, visualisation and animation cartography, remote sensing, geography, geology, ecology, other geosciences and territorial management. The graduate gains theoretical knowledge and a practical ability in theoretical, general and thematic cartography, cartographic informatics, land surveying, physical and social geography, digital cartography, applied geoinformatics, cartographic reproduction and polygraphy. Graduates are recruited mainly by the Czech office for surveying, mapping and cadastre and its institutes; by cadastral offices, ministries, other state and regional bodies and also by private companies specialized in informatics, geoinformatics, cartography and land surveying. -
Physical Geography and Geoecology
A graduate is qualified for research and applied activities in all specializations of physical geography, as well as in geomorphology, hydrology, climatology, meteorology, geoecology, biogeography, pedogeography, general and regional geography. He is competent to solve complex problems regarding integration of the natural environment and society. He has experience with GIS, remote sensing and other methods of geoinformatics. Graduates can put their knowledge to use in research and survey institutes, universities, state administration and in organizations concerned with investigating and researching the dynamics of physical geographical processes and changes in the environment related to human activities, including natural hazards and risks, and the protection of nature and landscapes. -
Regional and Political Geography
Graduates have acquired the professional skills needed for work in a wider array of public institutions and private firms, i.e. in public administration, economic practice and territorial planning, services, tourism and other activities of tertiary sectors. As professionals specialized in the regional geography of foreign countries, they can be engaged in internationally oriented organizations (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, trade firms, travel agencies, etc.). In scientific inquiry, they can be engaged, for example, in research on globalization, issues of political power in a divided world, political aspects of environmental protection, etc. -
Social Geography and Regional Development
Graduates can find employment in a wide spectrum of subjects in both the private and public sectors. In the case of the public sector, employment opportunities can be found at all levels of government - from central authorities (ministries) to regional development departments of self-governing regions and towns - where they deal with issues of physical planning, regional development, environmental protection, European integration and tourism. Within the private sector, graduates can find job opportunities, for example, in regional development agencies, firms which elaborate strategic plans for towns and regions, real estate agencies, and project and consultancy organizations (market research, localization of economic activities, etc.). Graduates can also focus on research of the social and economic (sub)systems of society and the economy.

A graduate is endowed with a comprehensive knowledge of development of natural sphere generally, social structures and processes and their impact on the landscape and the ways of its use. A graduate is able to analyse, evaluate and interpret landscape changes; formulate appropriate conclusions and strategies based on theories and methods used in geoecology, human geography, historiography and regional development. A graduate is ready to work for private, profitable public, state and international institutions dealing with the landscape both in project and decisive spheres (physical and strategic planning, nature conservation), and to get involved as in basic as in applied research (doctoral studies, academic and commercial spheres).

A graduate of the master’s degree programme in Global migration and development studies is ready to work for private, community, state and international organizations which deal with international migration and migrants´ integration issues, international development, development cooperation and education and other related matters both in Czechia and abroad. A graduate is able to assume a critical attitude towards the studied topics, to put it in a broader context, to identify causes of existing problems and to propose, manage, and evaluate projects in practice. On the other hand, a graduate is endowed with a theoretical knowledge which along with ability to apply both qualitative and quantitative analytical methods provide him/her a possibility to start a doctoral studies or other activities within an academic career.

The graduate is competent to teach geography, particularly at secondary schools and multiple-year grammar schools, because he possesses systematic knowledge and skills in the science of geography and its disciplines, as well as basic knowledge and skills in didactics, pedagogy and psychology. Demography
A graduate of the Master's program in demography may subsequently pursue subject-related study towards a doctoral degree. Further opportunities for graduates exist in both research and professional work. Among potential workplaces of interest to graduates are scientific research institutes which deal with a wide array of human or human population studies, ranging from socio-economic studies to medical and anthropological research. Graduates work as demographic experts at all levels of government, from local authorities (municipal or regional) to national (state authorities, government ministries, or state statistical services), as well as in the private sector, ranging from opinion polling firms, to departments of marketing, human resources, and advertising of large corporations.

Geology
Graduates have a broad knowledge of geology, and a basic knowledge of engineering geology, hydrogeology and applied geophysics. They completed courses in geology, paleontology, hydrogeology, mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry and economic geology which authorize them, according to Act 62/1998 Coll., to carry out geological work, as well as basic and applied scientific research and development in the Earth sciences. They are able to analyze the rock environment, its structure, physical and chemical parameters and to study processes of migration and interaction of substances between rocks, atmosphere and hydrosphere. -
Applied Geology
Graduates have a broad knowledge of geology, and a basic knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry. They completed specialized courses in hydrogeology, engineering geology and applied geophysics. Their main focus is on the search for groundwater resources, protection and optimization of their use, remediation of polluted localities, exploration for demanding construction works (tunnels, dams, motorways and railways), assessment of slope stability and remedies for landslides, evaluation of impacts on the environment, and determination of the composition and heterogeneities of the rock environment using measurements of various physical fields. According to their particular orientation, graduates are suited for positions as hydrogeologists, engineering geologists and geophysicists in private companies, public administration and research. -

Social Epidemiology
Graduate of "Social epidemiology" has a comprehensive knowledge about humans´ environment, both about material and social features, particularly about those factors in the environment that could influence health. Graduate is ready to work in private or public or non-governmental organizations, deal with the issues of environment, social inequalities in health, regional planning or have abilities to fulfill the tasks in the area of prevention of diseases and protect health (e.g. in the public health institutions). He/she can analyze the problems in all the components of natural environment and design strategies in the realm of public health and health policies on both the regional and national levels.

Hydrology and hydrogeology
Graduates of the Hydrology and Hydrogeology master study programme gained general and specialized knowledge of phenomena and processes in the hydrosphere and influences of human activities on water resources and water circulation on the Earth including impact on quality of surface water and groundwater. During the studies, they gained knowledge of hydrology, hydrogeology, hydrochemistry and water treatment, information about water ecosystems and mastered laboratory and field methods, remote sensing, GIS and methods of mathematical and numerical modelling. The graduates are capable of solving partial and complex tasks of practice, and applying the latest achievements of the field. They are prepared for further scientific career as well as for practical employment in public administration or private sector.
