- Coexisting Cyclic Parthenogens Comprise a Holocene Species Flock
- An evolutionary study on cladocerans inhabiting circumbaltic glacial-origin lakes shows that cyclic parthenogens may diversify in a short evolutionary time frame. The study was published in PloS ONE by Markéta Faustová and Veronika Sacherová from the Department of Ecology, together with US and Swedish co-authors.

- Prof. Vladimír Kořínek published online large database of cladoceran samples available in his collection. It is a great source of material for taxonomists & ecologists.
- Looking for your snail...!
- We would like to ask you for help with collecting live Burgundy (=Roman) snails (Helix pomatia) for our research project. We are trying to find out where the species originated, where it survived the climatic changes in the last hundreds of thousands years, from where it spread to various parts of Europe and how was its distribution influenced by human actions. Therefore we need a quite dense network of samples throughout large parts of Europe. For mutual comparison, we are seeking Helix from both human-influenced localities and more natural environments. We need for molecular analyses, most conveniently living individuals (which are easy to store and send).

- The enigma of terrestrial primary productivity
- Review by Irena Šímová and David Storch won the first (2015) Ecography E4 award (The Ecography Award for Excellence in Ecology and Evolution). Paper tackle an important but highly challenging topic, the measurement and, estimation, and biogeographical role of terrestrial primary productivity (NPP) on a global scale. The review is thorough and in-depth in its coverage and remarkably successful in explaining complicated problems.

- Popular Science: Carnivores in the shadow of bigger and more famous colleagues. How do foxes, badgers and martens live?
- In recent years we can see the return of big carnivores into Central Europe. Wolves, lynxes and bears are resettling the landscape and smaller carnivores are on the edge of interest. Therefore, a team of scientists led by Klára Pyšková from the Department of Ecology of our faculty focused on them.

- Popular Science: How to score an invasion?
- There are already several documents listing the one hundred worst alien species in Europe and aiming at raising awareness of the biological invasions and their possible impact. However, an international team, including Professor Petr Pyšek from the Department of Ecology of the Faculty of Science, decided to create a first list based on objective, precisely-defined criteria scoring the plant and animal species with respect to their real potential to cause ecological and socioeconomic damage in Europe.

- Popular Science: Is there a danger from arctic mosquitoes?
- Mosquitoes are known to be carriers of a wide spectrum of dangerous diseases. In this regard, tropical diseases, e.g. malaria, are the most well-known ones. However, we can also find some of them in the polar regions. A research team led by the Institute of Parasitology of Biology Centre CAS in České Budějovice focused on a survey of dangerous viruses in mosquitoes in the Arctic.

- How does climate affect plant traits?
- Irena Šímová from the Department of Ecology of the Faculty of Science, Charles University, is one of two main authors of a study, in which scientists from a total of 23 workplaces across Europe and America participated. Its main objective was to find out what traits of woody and herbaceous plants on the American continent are affected by the climate. For the analysis, scientists used data in the BIEN and TRY databases. They contain extensive datasets on occurrences of plant species and plant traits. Woody plants have revealed a clear influence of the climate on individual traits. These two growth forms of plants - trees and herbs - seem to have different life strategies.

- Popular Science: Subglacial silicon as another player in global nutrient cycling
- As recently published in Nature, methane released from subglacial meltwater is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. However, it is not only subglacial methane which is responsible for changes in greenhouse gas concentrations. The international team of scientists, in collaboration with three polar ecologists from the Department of Ecology, found that there is another important nutrient influencing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations, fortunately by the utilization of carbon dioxide. The name of this player is Silicon.

- Petr Pyšek awarded International Biogeography Society’s 2021 Alfred Russel Wallace Award
- Dr. Petr Pyšek is a Professor at our Department of Ecology, as well as at the Institute of Botany, Czech Academy of Science. As one of the most important invasion ecologists globally, his research has contributed greatly to the development of research on many of Wallace’s interests, particularly in the area of biogeography.

- We have a new cover in Genes!
- Cover story: Chondrichthyes (sharks, sawfish, skates, rays and chimaeras) consist a species-rich lineage of cartilaginous fishes and occupy a key position in the phylogeny of vertebrates. We sequenced and annotated the complete mitogenomes of four species of sharks and five species of rays. Subsequently, we analyzed the mitogenomes from public databases and we reconstructed the phylogenetic relations of 172 chondrichthyan species by Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference methods based on the concatenated sequences of the 13 protein-coding mitochondrial genes. The present study expands our knowledge on the systematics and genetic differentiation of Chondrichthyes and contributes to our understanding of their evolutionary history.

- Vojtěch Jarošík Award for 2022
- In the ninth year of Vojtěch Jarošík Award, students or recent graduates submitted eleven papers that were published in their final form in 2022. Compared to the previous three years, when the number of evaluated papers ranged from seventeen to twenty, this was a quantitative decrease. However, there was no shortage of high-quality works published in prestigious peer-reviewed journals.
