About Us

Viničná 5

The Department of Genetics and Microbiology is one of the largest departments of the Biology Section, Faculty of Science, Charles University, with more than 70 internal members. It currently has 3 full professors, 7 associate professors, 64 assistant professors, lectors or research fellows and 15 technicians. The complete list of the internal members of the Department can be found here.

The research activity of the Department encompasses various areas of genetics, molecular and cell biology, microbiology and virology. However, it also reaches out to other scientific fields such as physiology, biochemistry, phylogenetics, evolutionary biology, etc. The diversity of scientific projects is reflected both in the wide variety of organisms the research is performed upon (viruses, bacteria, yeasts and other fungi, plants and animals including Man) and in the plentitude of experimental methods and designs used. At present, the Department consists of ten research teams which often cooperate with the other departments of the Faculty of Science, other faculties of the Charles University, and various scientific institutes and universities both in the Czech Republic and abroad. If you are interested in such scientific cooperation (either as a student or a postdoc), further information can be obtained from the heads of the respective research teams. Our research is supported by a number of national and international grants. The results obtained in the course of these projects are regularly published in renowned scientific journals.

Praktikum

The teaching/study activities include almost 70 lectures and practical courses that constitute an important part of the study curricula for B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. students of the Faculty of Science. Moreover, members of the Department supervise students at all three levels of the Czech higher education system during their work on graduation theses and dissertations. The Department trains students in both "biological" Bachelor’s Degree Study programmes provided by the Faculty of Science, i.e. the "Biology" programme and the "Molecular Biology and Biochemistry of Organisms" programme. With regards to the Master’s Degree Study, two Czech study programmes are under the administration of the Department: the "Genetics, Molecular Biology and Virology" and the "Microbiology". Recently, we have also opened (in cooperation with two other Departments of our Faculty) a new M.Sc. Study Programme "Parasitology and Infection Biology". More information on the individual Master’s Degree specializations can be found in the Teaching and Study section of these pages. Each year cca 26 students graduate from the Department with the B.Sc. degree and 29 students with the M.Sc. degree.

The highest level of the university education, i.e. the Ph.D. study, is currently provided by the Department within the framework of two study programmes: the "Molecular and Cellular Biology, Genetics and Virology" and the "Microbiology". The number of students currently participating in these two programmes exceeds 180, the average number of students graduating each year is 15.

The laboratories and study rooms of the Department of Genetics and Microbiology are located at Viničná 5, mainly on the first and ground floors of this building (some laboratories are also in the basement). Laboratories of some research groups are also located at Biotechnology and Biomedicine Center of the Academy of Sciences and Charles University ("BIOCEV") in Vestec. The Laboratory of Plant Genetics is located at Brožek’s Genetic Garden (Studničkova N12).
