Coexisting Cyclic Parthenogens Comprise a Holocene Species Flock

An evolutionary study on cladocerans inhabiting circumbaltic glacial-origin lakes shows that cyclic parthenogens may diversify in a short evolutionary time frame. The study was published in PloS ONE by Markéta Faustová and Veronika Sacherová from the Department of Ecology, together with US and Swedish co-authors.

In the July 16th issue of the journal PLoS ONE (IF=4.351), M. Faustová and V. Sacherová of the Department of Ecology, Charles University in Prague, co-published an evolutionary study of small freshwater cyclic parthenogens Eubosmina (Crustacea). The systematics of morphologically variable members of this cladoceran genus puzzled researchers for over a century, especially since they apparently diversified only in the course of Holocene. This study brings evidence that despite their mode of reproduction, they have already formed some reproductive barriers, and the group represents a very young species flock.

This work is based on cooperation of three teams that conduct a long-term research of this model system: above mentioned M. Faustová and V. Sacherová, D. J. Taylor and D. H. Sheets of State University of New York at Buffalo, USA, and J.-E. Svensson of University College of Boras, Sweden.
