Paleogeographic reconstruction of quaternary deglaciation in mountain areas of the Bohemian massif

Identification data, head of the project

Czech Science Foundation (GA ČR), No. P209/10/0519, time of solution 2010-2013, head of the project Zbyněk Engel

Project annotation

The project aims to correlate Quaternary mountain glaciations in the Bohemian Massif. A local chronostratigraphic system will be proposed for the Šumava mountains and correlated with the one from the Krkonoše mountains. Sedimentary characteristics and weathering microforms allow for correlation of the preserved glacial accumulations whereas geochronological dating and palaeoenvironmental methods will be used for reconstruction of glacier retreat during the deglaciation period. Climatic and environmental changes will be described for the Late Glacial period and early Holocene. The proposed project solves one of important themes of Quaternary geology and geomorphology in Central Europe. Realization of the project will bring new information on palaeoclimatic and palaeoecological conditions in the Bohemian Massif during the Late Quaternary.
