About us

The Department of Applied Geoinformatics and Cartography has been established in 2003 to address the need for modern accredited education in applied Geomatics within the Faculty of Science of the Charles University in Prague where Geography education has a tradition of 150 years. Study at the Bachelor, Master’s, and Ph.D. levels is offered in cooperation with other Natural Science Departments. Department members are active in research projects at the National and international levels and participate in Scientific Symposia and Conferences.

The Department’s educational and research activities fall in the following main categories:

  • - Geographic Information Systems (GIS), concepts and applications
  • - Digital Photogrammetry, principles and practice

  • - Spatial Database Concepts, Establishment and Management

  • - Web applications of Geoinformatics

  • - Remote Sensing and its applications

  • - Visual representation of Spatial Data

  • - Interactive Mapping

  • - GNSS theory and use

  • - Computational geometry and Mathematical Cartography

  • - Thematic and Historical Cartography

  • - Operational applications of Geoinformatics in Natural Sciences

The Department’s activities are closely linked with other Natural Science departments and it cooperates with external research institutions through a variety of joint projects, such as ERASMUS, - an exchange program with participating universities in the EU. National grant-funded activities and International joint projects are carried out as well.

The Department is equipped with state-of-the-art hardware and software (link) and students are exposed to basic and advanced training within the newly developed Curriculum. Department graduates are well equipped to enter the work force in this exciting new field of information technology.
