The STARS scholarship offers fully financed PhD positions, ensuring top-notch education and a sufficient income for students enrolled in the Faculty of Science's doctoral programs. The primary goal of the STARS program is to draw outstanding students, both internationally and from the Czech Republic. Under the STARS program, students are assured a monthly stipend of at least 20,500 CZK (approximately 800 EUR). It's worth noting that the actual income may surpass this baseline, contingent upon the specific funding allocated to each unique project.

The deadline for application is the 13^th of March.

For the upcoming academic year, the Geographical Institute offers 11 PhD positions. The titles of PhD projects are listed below:

• Beyond Stationarity: Compound Impacts of Climate Change and Forest Disturbance on Hydrologic Extremes in Mountain Catchments;
• Bridging urban morphology and community ecology to study structure, organisation and evolution of cities;
• Detection and change detection of vegetation at the species/individual level using UAV/aerial imagery and machine learning/deep learning methods;
• Disentangling environmental drivers of boreal forest growth;
• Hazard evaluation from glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs);
• Inequality of neighbourhood choice in regions of Central Europe;
• Predicting tree growth into future – a space for time substitution approach;
• Quantifying the importance of phenology, growth rate, and growth occurrence for annual wood production;
• Snowmelt water distribution in the critical zone under climate variability: a large-sample approach;
• The glaciation of North America through the Quaternary;
• Using a process-based model of wood formation to unravel regional gradients and temporal changes in growth kinetics and phenology of forest tree species.
