The rules for preparing thesis work at the vascular plants section of the Department of Botany of the Charles University Faculty of Science for students with teaching combinations
  1. Those interested in writing a thesis must report to the vascular plants sections (to the advisor and section head) no later than during their third year. Forth-year students can only be accepted if their studies are arranged so that any field work takes place during at least two vegetative seasons.

  2. The selected topic of the thesis must be approved by the advisor. Possible thesis areas are posted on the department website; other topics must be discussed in advance with the advisor. The topic, objectives, approach and scope of work (specified in the dissertation application) is subject to approval by the department faculty.

  3. The study plan is prepared by the student in cooperation with the advisor (possibly the section head). Based on current rules (Karolínka), the plan must include professional seminars.

  4. While working on a thesis, students must make 2 professional seminar presentations: 1) introductory presentation- generally at the beginning of the 4th year, 2) information about the progress of the work and partial results – during the 5th year.

  5. Upon recommendation of an advisor and approval by the section head, students can get a work room and chip to enter the building outside of normal working hours.

  6. Students shall conduct their thesis work in accordance with the approach agreed upon with the advisor. They will regularly keep the advisor informed on how their work is progressing (at least once every 3 months) either in person or electronically. Any prolonged and unexplained lack of communication may be grounds for their expulsion from the masters program by the advisor and section head.

  7. After completion of studies, students are required to return all equipment and aids they have borrowed (including keys and chips). Advisors are responsible to ensure this obligation is met.
