Services of the Geographical Section

Research and teaching in the departments of the Geography Section is supported by departmental special purpose units and services.

Purpose-built facilities

Basic services of sector-wide significance are provided by section-specific special-purpose facilities: the Geographical Library and the Map Collection. The Geographical Library underwent a major refurbishment, modernisation and extension in the summer of 2005, a complete change to the lending system with the opening of the live library collection for free access to users and the introduction of electronic borrowing on student and staff cards. The Map Collection, originally a faculty department, was transferred to the Geography Section on 1 July 2005 and has undergone significant renovation and modernisation in recent years.

Sectional services

Map and Data Centre

Our main goal is the implementation of effective and integrated data management by the Geographical Institute of the Faculty of Science. We provide support to research teams, staff and students. On the DataHub portal, we present advanced visualizations of (not only) spatial data presenting the scientific outputs of Albertov scientists in an innovative way. We create interactive map applications, storymaps, dashboards, 3D scenes and much more.

Volkswagen Transporter and Volkswagen Caddy

The Geographical Section has two vehicles - a Volkswagen Transporter van and a Volkswagen Caddy passenger car, which are used by the department and its employees for field research, field practice, excursions or joint trips to seminars and conferences.

Common section software

Statistical (SPSS and SAS) and geoinformatics (Arc GIS and PCI) software is acquired from joint sources. The most important support for the work of geographers is the university license of ArcGIS from ESRI, valid since January 1, 2005.

Management of computer technology and computer rooms

Since September 2003, the management of computer technology has been provided jointly. In spring 2005, the original single computer room in the geography section Z3 was reinforced with new modern GIS and DPZ laboratories K1 and K2. Since October 2005, the Centre for Information Technology of the Faculty of Science of Charles University has been providing the administration of Z3, K1 and K2.
