Funding for science and research

Demanding research in the natural sciences is for the most part financed from external sources (budgetary and extra budgetary).

The faculty receives funding for research activity through a great number of programs which receive public funding from the Czech Republic and the European Union. Funding from Czech sources is divided according to current legislation into targeted funding (primarily grants) and institutional funding, which is allocated based on an evaluation of the quality of research activity of the institution according to the current Methodology of the government Council for Research, Development and Innovation.

Among Czech grant resources, a key source of our funding are the public tenders announced by the Czech Science Foundation for basic research. A major role is also played by the Charles University Grant Agency, which uses funds provided by the Ministry of Education to finance student research, especially in graduate school (Tab. 1).

A significant role for the faculty is also played by projects financed through tenders for grants announced by European Union institutions (Tab. 2). In recent years this primarily concerns the consortium projects of the 7th EU Framework Programme. The faculty is also the recipient of one of several prestigious projects awarded to the Czech Republic through the Ideas Programme organized by the European Research Council. This project is being carried out at our organic chemistry department. As of this year, the 7th Framework Programme will also tie into the Horizon 2020 programme, in which we hope to be obtain a large share of funding available to research institutions of Visegrad Group countries.
