Basic information

 

The Department of Social Geography and Regional Development is one of the top human geography departments in Czechia and Central Europe as a whole. Its faculty members are the principal investigators of research grants funded by the Czech Science Foundation and the Charles University Science Foundation, and are involved in international research grants. Members of the Department also regularly publish abroad, serve on editorial boards of international academic journals, participate in major international scientific associations, and play an important role in the Czech Geographical Society. The QS World University Ranking by Subject ranked the School of Geography at Charles University’s Faculty of Science in the top one hundred Geography schools/departments in the world in seven consecutive years between 2011 and 2018. Only one additional discipline at the entire Charles University ranked in the top one hundred in the same period.

 

The Departmental strengths are in three main areas:

  • Social and human geography, economic geography and regional development,
  • Regional and political geography,
  • Educational geography
  • Global migration and development studies
  • Social epidemiology

 

 

The Department oversees habilitations and promotions to full professor in the fields of social geography and regional development and in regional and political geography.

 

Since 1994 the department has cooperated with Dartmouth College (New Hampshire, USA) to bring over American students for a semester to focus on the transformation of the Czech Republic, Central and Eastern Europe, and the incorporation of these areas into European structures.

Since 1995, the Geoatest department has offered continuing education courses for teachers. This workplace coordinates long-term international student exchange programs such as Erasmus.

In addition to handling numerous grant programs (GA ČR, GA UK etc.), the department plays an important role in the work of the Center of Excellence - “Research of Socio-spatial Inequality and Risks in the Early 21st Century” and the Program for Developing the Scientific Field of Geography (PRVOUK).
