Our parasitologists in BIOCEV (research team of Jan Tachezy) discovered anaerobic peroxisome in free-living Mastigamoeba balamuthi. The article was published in the current issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Science of the USA.

TARGET project: aimed at bacterial resistance
The foremost topic of global medical research in recent decades has been cancer. Today, however, an increasing part of the scientific community is switching its focus to the issue of growing bacterial resistance, which is behind the increasing frequency of failed antibiotic treatment. A team from the Department of Biochemistry of the Faculty of Science at Charles University, led by Assoc. Prof. Markéta Martínková, has joined a project focusing on this phenomenon.

Charles University technology spin off LAM X a.s. founded
The Charles University and the Czech Academy of Sciences joined forces via their subsidiaries Charles University Innovations Prague s.r.o. and i& i Prague s.r.o. and today they are founding an academic, technology spin off LAM X a.s. The company is going to focus on development of nanomaterials that can be utili s ed for a fabri cation of bandages of the future and its goal is to transfer research results into practice. Planned initial investment is 12 million CZK.

Could glucose promote the spread of yeast infection in the body?
Scientists from the research teams of Zdena Palková (FoS CUNI) and Libuše Váchová (IMIC) at BIOCEV published new findings in the prestigious journal npj Biofilms and Microbiomes on the regulation of formation and dispersal of yeast biofilms. The article contributes towards understanding the mechanism of, and risk factors associated with, the development of fungal infections, and could provide inspiration for effective drug development.

Information regarding teaching at the Faculty of Science
Starting on Monday 20.4.2020, in line with the "Timetable for relaxation of measures in the field of education" published by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, direct and indirect teaching will be possible at the faculty in groups with a maximum of 5 students, this primarily being to ensure successful completion of individual degrees of study. The consent of all participants is necessary for all types of teaching as is compliance with the valid anti-epidemic measures. All faculty buildings will be open from 20.4.2020 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Operation of libraries will remain in the current regime.

The 4EU+ European University Alliance, which we are members of, opened the first call for joint education projects. Available details on the call might be found in attached document together with form of application. The deadline for proposals is June 15th for Flagship 2 and July1st for all the other Flagships.

Pharmaceutical company SANDOZ donated CZK 500,000 to BIOCEV for coronavirus testing
The CZK 500,000 donation is designated for the purchase of test sets to detect SARS-Cov-2, laboratory plasticware and devices, pipettes, chemicals, and enzymes. To date, over 3,000 samples from hospitals and retirement homes have been tested in the BIOCEV centre. The daily capacity is 320 samples.

Opinions of The Task Force of the Faculty of Science at Charles University of 1 June 2020
The Task Force of Charles University, Faculty of Science (FoS), has adopted, in accordance with extraordinary measures of the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic ref. no. MZDR 20584/2020-3/MIN/KAN of 25 May 2020 and ref. no. 15757/2020-19/MIN/KAN of 25 May 2020, the following opinion on the operation of the FoS with regard to developments in the Covid-19 pandemic:
Petr Pyšek awarded International Biogeography Society’s 2021 Alfred Russel Wallace Award
Dr. Petr Pyšek is a Professor of Ecology at the Institute of Botany, Czech Academy of Sciences and Department of Ecology, Faculty of Science. As one of the most important invasion ecologists globally, his research has contributed greatly to the development of research on many of Wallace’s interests, particularly in the area of biogeography.

Our microbiologists at BIOCEV have uncovered new principles behind intercellular interactions that influence the evolution of yeast communities. The article has just been published in "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA".

A paper about the origin of teeth in Science!
Valéria Vaškaninová from the Institute of Geology and Palaeontology (Faculty of Science, Charles University) is the main author of a paper recently published in Science. An international team she has put together was composed of scientists from Uppsala University, the European Synchrotron ESRF, Natural History Museum in London and National Museum in Prague, where the studied fossils are deposited.

Magnetic nanoparticles change their magnetic structure in a magnetic field
When ultrafine magnetic particles are exposed to an external magnetic field, their magnetic core grows in a previously unexpected way. That is the result of an international study based on neutron scattering experiments performed under the lead of chemists from the University of Cologne (UoC). The study ‘Field-Dependence of Magnetic Disorder in Nanoparticles’ has been published in the journal Physical Review X.

ONYGENALES 2020: Basic and clinical research advances in dermatophytes and dimorphic fungi in hindsight
ONYGENALES workshop, bi-annual meeting organised by ISHAM Working Group ONYGENALES in cooperation with Charles University, was held in Prague on 10 September – 11 September, 2020. It brought together researchers, students, clinicians, laboratorians and public health professionals across biomedical disciplines interested in current developments in dermatophyte, dimorphic and keratinophilic fungi research.

The CU crisis team hereby appeals to students accommodated at CU dormitories
Following the adoption of Czech Government Resolution no. 1022 on 12 October 2020, we request that students accommodated at CU dormitories give responsible consideration to their continued stay at their dormitory. However, any students who are unable to leave their dormitory for good reason (risk of the spread of infection amongst high-risk groups on return to one’s place of abode) shall be allowed to remain at their dormitory in accordance with the declaration of the Czech Ministry of Education.

"History and development of analytical chemistry at Charles University before 1920" is the article by Karel Nesmerak Ph.D. and Radek Chalupa, MSc. from Department of Analytical Chemistry, published in the november issue of journal Montshefte für Chemie – Chemical Monthly. The article is dedicated to the centenary of the establishment of the independent Faculty of Science of the Charles University, in particular, it provides an overview of the history of analytical chemistry at this university from its founding in 1348 to 1920.
