Study

Hydropraktikum

Department of Ecology supervises the curricula and diploma projects of Master and PhD. degrees in ecology. The study of Master degree in ecology is open for any student who accomplished an adequate training on bachelor level (i.e. biological sciences or fields as environmental studies, agriculture, water management etc.).  Since 2019 is it possible for foreign student to apply for a MSc. study of Ecology in English language (subject to tuition fee).
Beside lectures and courses we consider the diploma project to be of the topmost importance. Before they start, the applicants should provide a consistent project proposal (incl. name of a supervisor and some basic information about time schedule, logistics and financial support).

Master study of Ecology

Consists of two specialized fields (though a combination of both his possible upon request):
Aquatic Ecology (Hydrobiology)
Terrestrial Ecology

Voda

Curriculum of Aquatic Ecology

provides an advanced education and  erudition both in theoretical and practical aspects of aquatic ecology. The study is focused mainly on freshwater systems but we cover marine topics to some extent.  A MSc. graduate is fully competent and skilled to apply for positions in research institutes or in applied fields (drinking water treatments, hygiene, sewage water plants) as well as in biological labs, monitoring surveys, conservation, etc. Of course, the MSc. graduate can proceed to corresponding PhD. programmes.

Mlha

Curriculum of Terrestrial Ecology

provides an advanced education and  erudition in terrestrial and evolutionary ecology. Graduates are fully competent for jobs in applied fields (conservation biology, pest regulation etc.) as well as for positions in research institutes.
The curricula are based both on regular lectures and practical training in labs and in a field.
Applicants should be aware that we require a basic knowledge in ecological and evolutionary disciplines. However, though it is possible to fill some gaps in education during the masters, it usually requires a prolongation of the study for a year or more.

There are study advisors who can help you with which lectures and courses to choose. For Aquatic Ecology contact Martin Černý (cerny@natur.cuni.cz), for Terrestrial Ecology contact Ondřej Sedláček (zbrd@email.cz).

Ph.D. study

The core of Ph.D. study in Ecology is a research project aimed at original scientific papers. The project should focus at a well-defined problem in ecological research, with clear testable hypotheses. It must have a competent supervisor and adequate funding must be secured.
The resulting thesis should be composed from a minimum of three manuscripts or papers suitable for international peer-reviewed journals, accompanied by a general introduction. At least one of the manuscripts must be published or accepted in a journal covered by ISI Web of Science, the impact factor of which exceeds 1; alternatively, two papers accepted in journals with the impact factor exceeding 0.5 may be presented. The PhD candidate must be the first author of at least one of the accepted papers. (Note: Theses recently defended at the department substantially exceeded the minimum requirements outlined above.)
We accept foreign students not fluent in Czech for PhD studies in English language, with the same conditions as for the Czech candidated. For details, contant the prospective supervisor or directly the head of the Ph.D. board of ecology prof. David Storch; for administrative issues, Ms. Valerie Havrdová.

Topics of diploma projects:

We cover a broad scale of ecological disciplines, from field monitoring surveys to molecular ecology topics. Students participate on research projects carried out in the Department, however, it is possible to take part and get involved in research of other groups either in Faculty or in research institutes in the Czech Republic or abroad.

ERASMUS

If you are interested in studying ecology at our department for three months to one year within an ERASMUS fellowship, please see this information.
