Remote access (proxy settings)

Instructions for setting up remote access to systems available only from the PřF internal network (e.g. CIS).

EZ Proxy can also be used to access only information resources ("scientific articles") of the faculty (without the need to set anything in the browser). However, by following these instructions, you will also get access to all information resources of the faculty.

What is a proxy server?

When using a proxy server, users' browsers read data from the network via a computer (proxy server) located at the faculty. The purpose of a proxy server is to allow its user to appear on the Internet as if he were connected from the faculty network.

Setup procedure

The setup procedure is slightly different for each browser type and version.

EZ Proxy can also be used to access only information resources ("scientific articles") of the faculty (without the need to set anything in the browser).

Google Chrome

Recommended settings using the SwitchySharp Proxy extension:

This extension makes it very easy to automatically or manually switch between a proxy and a direct connection, which is often very convenient.

  1. Install the SwitchySharp Proxy extension
  2. An application icon will appear on the right, next to the address field [1]
  3. Name the profile, e.g. natur.cuni.cz [2]
  4. In the Manual configuration dialog, enter the address: cache.natur.cuni.cz and port 3128 [3]
  5. Check the item "Use the same proxy server for all protocols" [4]
  6. Save settings [5]
  7. Now you can easily switch between direct connection and proxy natur.cuni.cz [6]
  8. The first time you use it, you will be prompted to enter your username and password (CAS)

Rule for using a proxy only for certain websites (eg CIS, information sources...)
Most often it is desirable to use a proxy only for a specific website. If you leave the proxy on permanently, it can cause problems on other websites. An elegant solution to this problem is to set rules for the use of proxies.
The following procedure assumes the creation of a profile according to the previous step.

  1. Create a new rule using the +New Rule button [1]
  2. Enter any rule name [2]
  3. Enter the URL for which the rule will be used [3]
(in the case of CIS it is: natur.verso.is.cuni.cz )
  4. Select the Proxy Profile based on the previous instructions (in our example natur.cuni.cz) [4]
  5. Save settings [5]
  6. Switchy app! switch to Auto Switch Mode [6]

After you set up the proxy, the browser will ask you to verify the user when accessing the website (e.g. cis.natur.cuni.cz). Use Use the username for the faculty e-mail (without natur.cuni.cz) and the password for CAS .

Individual proxies can be quickly switched by left-clicking on the FoxyProxy icon

After you have set up the proxy, the browser will ask you to verify the user when accessing the website cis.natur.cuni.cz. Use the username for the faculty e-mail (without natur.cuni.cz) and the password for CAS .
