Information for applicants for Ph.D. study at the Faculty of Science at Charles University in Prague.
The purpose of Ph.D. study consists in training for independent scientific work and acquiring suitable qualifications for this purpose. The applicant demonstrates the necessary qualifications for study during the acceptance procedure. During study, the Ph.D. student attends lectures, courses, study stays and laboratory practice and works on his thesis according to his individual study plan. The study is completed by a state Ph.D. examination and defence of a thesis. Graduates are awarded the academic degree of “Doctor” (abbreviated Ph.D. after the name).
The Faculty of Science offers Ph.D. study in 31 certified fields in Ph.D. study programs. Study in a wide range of Ph.D. study programs takes place in close cooperation with the institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and other research institutions in the Czech Republic.

Certified Ph.D. study programs
- Geology – geology in a specialized field (stratigraphic and historical geology, structural geology, paleobotany, zoopaleontology, mineralogy and crystallography, geochemistry, economic geology and petrology).
- Applied geology – applied geology in a specialized field (economic geology, engineering geology, hydrogeology, applied geophysics, environmental geology and geochemistry are concerned with study and use of the geological environment and protection of the environment).
