Master’s branches in Geology
Hydrogeology – water is one of the basic sources of life on Earth. Hydrogeology is concerned with study of the occurrence, movement and properties of water, its use and protection. Employment of graduates – search for and protection of good drinking water sources for the population, use of mineral waters, dealing with the impacts of economic activities on water and the environment.
Engineering geology guarantees the safety of structures. It applies knowledge of the geological environment in resolving practical tasks in the construction industry and land-use planning. Employment of graduates – investigative work for establishing and construction of structures (especially tunnels, dams, highways and bridges), dealing with slope stability (landslides), basic documents for land-use planning.
Applied geophysics “sees” deep below the surface of the Earth. It uses natural and artificial physical fields to determine the composition of the structure and inhomogeneities in the geological environment for use in basic research and practical utilization of a territory. It monitors and studies earthquakes. Employment of graduates – applied geophysics is an essential tool for the other fields of geology and in resolving practical tasks in protection of the environment.
Geochemistry studies the metabolism of the Earth. It is concerned with study of the chemical composition of the Earth’s spheres and study of the chemical processes occurring in them. It describes both organic and inorganic compounds as the structural elements of rocks, soil and water. It works with data from the field and the laboratory. Employment of graduates – description of the chemical composition of natural components, monitoring and study of pollution, study and protection of mineral resources, search for natural resources.
Environmental geology – studies chemical and biogeochemical processes occurring in the upper spheres of the Earth (atmosphere, biosphere, geosphere) and studies and describes the interactions of these spheres. It is concerned with monitoring contaminants in the environment and describes their movement. It utilizes laboratory chemical analytical data as an instrument. Employment of graduates – assessment of the quality of the geological environment, surface and ground waters, pollution of ecosystems, monitoring of the vicinity of landfills and industrial exhalations. Description and evaluation of contamination derived from natural and anthropogenic sources.
Economic geology studies and searches for the mineral resources of the Earth. It combines knowledge of the fields of geology so as to ensure energy and raw materials for the development of society and establishment of principles for the protection and use of all the resources of the Earth. Employment of graduates – study and protection of mineral resources, mining of mineral resources.
Mineralogy and crystallography study the basic elements of the Earth’s crust. These fields specialize in the systematic study of minerals, in study of the laws determining the formation and occurrence of minerals. They determine the mineralogical composition of rocks. They study the conversions of individual minerals under various physical chemical conditions. Employment of graduates – study of minerals that can be used in industry and agriculture. Search for and evaluation of minerals for use in jewelry. Monitoring of the composition and changes in minerals in historical structures, study of the mineralogical composition of archeological objects and historical paintings.
Paleontology studies the development of life on Earth. It is concerned with the study of fossil life, of both plant and animal origin. Its results form the basis for reconstruction of the paleoclimate and environment in the geological past. Employment of graduates – basic and applied research, protection of the environment, prospecting for petroleum.
Petrology forms the basis for understanding the structure of the Earth. It is concerned with the composition, formation and development of the rocks forming the crust and mantle of the Earth and other cosmic bodies. It encompasses field and laboratory study of rocks. Employment of graduates – as a basic discipline employed by the other fields of geology, study of ornamental, construction and industrial stone.
Structural geology is an instrument for understanding the dynamics of the Earth’s crust. It studies the internal structure of geological bodies and their deformation by research in the field and mathematical modelling. Employment of graduates – study of the development of the Earth’s crust and assessment of its stability, for example in relation to assessment of the long-term stability of large structures and storage sites.
Basic geology gains knowledge of the current appearance and history of the Earth. It studies geological processes and the composition and structure of the Earth’s crust. It provides information on the history of the Earth, its organic and inorganic world, from its formation to the present time. Employment of graduates – basic and applied research, protection of the geological environment, state administration.
