Welcome to our webpage

Institute of Petrology and Structural Geology is a small research-oriented department at the Faculty of Science, Charles University, a university with over 670 years of tradition located in the historical city of Prague. The Institute employs specialists on structural geology/geodynamics, petrology and geochemistry running numerous externally funded research projects.

We aim to explore and understand the earth, its complex processes and their effects on society. Our research contributes to the fundamentals of igneous petrology, metamorphic petrology and structural geology. We encourage enquiries from qualified students, post-doctoral fellows, and visiting scientists. The IPSG offers a wide range of projects for diploma and doctoral research studies.

Research at the IPSG is organised into three groups:

  • Origin and evolution of magma
  • Metamorphic processes along the plate boundaries
  • Tectonic interpretations of mountain building processes

For more information go to the Research section

Our institute offers interesting and challenging courses on composition, structure, and evolution of the Earth. The IPSG offers a Master Degree programme in Geodynamics focusing on all subjects of structural geology/geodynamics, petrology and geochemistry. As integral part of our reserch unit we provide a full PhD programme in the above disciplines.
