Laboratory for optical analysis of crystallographic orientation

Institute of Petrology and Structural Geology

Laboratory for optical analysis of crystallographic orientation (CIP) at the Institute of Petrology and Structural Geology is equipped with an optical microscope JENAPOL to which a digital camera MicroFIRE is attached. The camera is connected to a computer with image snapping and image processing software.

Laboratory for optical analysis of crystallographic orientation is dedicated to determine crystallographic orientation of optically uniaxial minerals (namely quartz and calcite) directly from thin sections by using the Computer Integrated Polarization (CIP) Microscopy method developed by prof. Renée Heilbronner (Heilbronner and Pauli, 1993). The main advantage of this method is its low cost and spatial coverage. For further information please do not hesitate to contact us.
