Ph.D. projects

The Ph.D. research projects at the Institute cover a wide range of topics, mainly focused on palaeontology and geobiology, the evolution of life on Earth, and examining the interactions between life and geological processes in the geological past. The Institute offers a truly international environment for Ph.D. research, our current students come from Brasil, Slovenia, Switzerland, Slovakia, Ukraine, and Indonesia. The Ph.D. dissertations defended at our Institute meet the highest international standarts, are commonly written in English, and include papers in highly ranked international journals. Recently, our graduate students also received the Faculty of Science Dean´s Award for the best Ph.D. thesis (Jaroslava Hajná in 2013, Filip Tomek in 2015, Lukáš Laibl in 2017) and obtained research positions at scientific institutions both in the Czech Republic and abroad.

Supporting Ph.D. research

Every year, the Institute provides financial support (minigrants) to outstanding short-term research projects of our Ph.D. students. This internal funding is to be used to cover travel expenses and field work, analytical data acquisition, or international conference presentations. Deadline for submitting applications is March, 15th.
