Hydrogeology

  • Efficiency of capillary barriers; mathematical modelling of unsaturated zone, effect of faults in impervious sheeting and effect of retention-curve hysteresis.
  • Hydromechanics of clay suspensions; determination of hydromechanic characteristics, laboratory measurements and mathematical modelling.
  • Water flow and transport of radionuclides in hard-rock fractures.
  • Viscosity of salt diapirs – flow with large Reynolds numbers; analytical and numerical solutions, inverse problems.
  • Mean residence time, flow and chemical fluxes in saturated, unsaturated and soil zone of karst (18O, 2H, 13C, 3H, CFCs, SF6 tracers)
  • Radiocarbon dating of salt karst, diapir surfaces, Iran; dating of cave deposits Timpanogos Cave, Utah, USA
  • Study of space distribution of chemistry in Idaho batholith hydrothermal system

Engineering geology

  • Laboratory and numerical modelling (FEM) of cementation bonds in fine grained and coarse grained soils.
  • Numerical analysis of retaining walls in fine grained and coarse grained soils using elastoplastic and hypoplastic constitutive models.
  • Influence of adding CaO (stabilisation) on texture and hydraulic conductivity of clayey silts.
  • The effect of capillary suction on mechanical properties of fine grained soils.
  • Development of constitutive models for thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour of unsaturated soils.
  • Development of probabilistic methods in geotechnical engineering and application of advanced constitutive models in probabilistic analyses of geotechnical problems.

  • Municipal solid waste: landfill and its capping, measurement and prediction of settlement, numerical modelling of water regime in the landfill capping; geochemistry of the landfill

Geophysics

  • Granitoids: Modelling of their shape with the use of geophysical data, Hydrothermal alteration of granitoids - geophysical, textural and geochemical records
  • Gravity prospecting of cavities in soils focused on gravity effect of surrounding deformation zones - cooperation with experts on geomechanics
  • Environmental radiation, radon in soil gas and national radon reference sites, radioactivity of rocks, mapping of nuclear fallout, radiometric maps
  • Mechanical properties of rocks (particularly elastic anisotropy) in laboratory and field conditions; further usage of both P- and S- elastic waves
  • Hydrogeophysics – shallow geophysics in hydrology, environmental issues and engineering geology
  • Seismicity driven by fluids - both injection induced and natural earthquake swarms
