Project annotation

Natural water retention in european floodplains was decreased in the last two centuries thanks to the demand for agricultural produkcion and consequent water engeneeiring measures. This project is focused on research, promotion and re-integration of natural retention - shallow flooding and infiltration to the floodplain sediments - into the system of flood prevention. The project will be solved on two levels: on the level of three model floodplain segments and nationwide. Concerning the model floodplains, the aim of the project is to quantify water retention, propose measures to increase it and study the phenomenon of shallow flooding and infiltration from the holistic point of view. On the nation scale the aim of the project is proposal of floodplain types from and file of measures for increase of retention. Study sites are Lužnice floodplain, an example of floodplain with preserved hydrology including natural shallow flooding and two substantially transformed floodplains - Stropnice and Blanice Rivers.
