Steppe or forest? International pedological research awarded

Barbora Vysloužilová from the Department of Physical Geography and Geoecology was awarded by the Dean’s prize of the Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Science for her phd thesis „Steppes ou forêts? Les conditions environnementales de la formation et de ľévolution des chernozems en Europe Centrale”. Her dissertation was made as a joint research (cotutelle) with the University of Strasbourg.

The thesis presents the qualitative near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) analysis of soil organic matter. The results confirmed that the vegetation cover of chernozems can be either grassland or woodland. Therefore, the findings proved that chernozems were formed also under woodland vegetation. This is in contrast with common hypothesis stating that chernozems were formed and preserved under steppe only.
