Fire drives significant changes in ecosystem structure, diversity and function, and affects species evolution and biomass dynamics. Understanding the ecology of terrestrial ecosystems requires a deeper insight into the role of fire in the earth system, from both temporal and spatial perspectives. Sedimentary charcoal is increasingly used in association with proxies of climate, vegetation and human impact to investigate past local and regional biomass burning. This talk will provide an overview of Holocene fire history and drivers in central and eastern Europe, reconstructed from fossil charcoal, with a focus on the Romanian Carpathians.
