New Wave 2014
The sixth year of the international student conference 'NEW WAVE' organized by the geographic section of the Faculty of Science of Charles University in Prague and Czech Geographical Society took place in the faculty premises on the 16th and 17th of May 2014.
The mayor of Prague, RNDr. Tomáš Hudeček, Ph.D., assumed the patronage for the conference.
The conference NEW WAVE aims to brong together postgraduate students and pedagogues across the broad spectrum of geographic and related disciplines and provides a platform for sharing of research carried out by (predominantly) young scientists. This year proved to be no exception, as there were over 60 participating students, pedagogues and lecturers from more than 12 domestic and foreign institutions. Apart from the well represented domestic audience, the conference had a significant international character encouraged by the predominance of sections held in the English language. Among the participants, there were colleagues from domestic institutions and other European countries, as well as from more distant states such as China or the USA.
The busy programme of the 6th NEW WAVE conference was launched by an opening speech of the vice dean of the Geographical Section of the Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague, doc. RNDr. Jakub Langhammer, Ph.D., and the secretary of the Czech Geographical Society, RNDr. Radim Perlín, Ph.D.
The participants were also welcomed to attend the lectures of the guests of honour of the conference, who were (on the pictures from the left side):

Apart from the interesting lectures from the keynote speakers, the conference featured a total of 30 contributions in seven sections presented by young researchers, which were followed by numerous discussions. The 6th NEW WAVE conference also included a section dedicated to the support of undergraduate student research, which hosted the announcement of the results of the competition for the best diploma thesis on the issue of migration organized by the Geomigration Research Centre. The first conference day was concluded by a dinner hosted for the conference participants.

The second day, as has become a tradition, accommodated an excursion, which took place in the Prague district of Dejvice and focused on community activities and the revival of public spaces. As part of the excursion, a lecture was delivered on the work and activities of a civic association called Živé město ('Vibrant city'), which aims to develop community relationships and the increase the citizens' interest in their locality through cultural events.
The participants were offered the possibility to publish their contributions in the reviewed geographic journal Information of CGS and the young scientists were also invited to publish in other scientific journals published by the Czech Geographical Society.

We are looking forward to the next "wave" of the already seventh year of the NEW WAVE conference in 2015 with further interesting topics explored by young researchers!
