Internationalisation

The Geographical Institute has long-term collaboration with a range of international partners and participates in international networks and projects focused on education, research and application into practice. We encourage both incoming and outgoing mobility of students and staff.

The Geographical Institute has long-term collaboration with a range of international partners and participates in international networks and projects focused on education, research and application into practice. Every spring semester since 1994 students from Dartmouth College in the USA have studied in the Department of Social Geography and Regional Development. Some doctorate dissertations are completed within a so-called co-adviser system (co-tutelle) in cooperation with partners in France. In research regarding the socio-economic aspects of health, we cooperate with leading experts from the University of California’s School of Public Health. The Department of Demography and Geodemography is part of the international network Population Europe: The European Population Partnership, which brings together 30 prestigious European demographic research institutions. ENVISAT, an established satellite data retrieval station and the realization of courses, involving leading European experts from the field of remote sensing, are examples of the increasing cooperation of the Department of Applied Geoinformatics and Cartography with the European Space Agency (ESA). The geomorphology and geodynamics team from the Department of Physical Geography and Geoecology has been recognized as a World Centre of Excellence for the period 2017–2020 for its research on mass movements of soil. The team works with colleagues from Oxford and Cambridge in England, among others, in researching topics concerning natural threats and the effects of climatic changes. We are active in international professional organizations (e.g. the International Geographical Union – IGU, the International Consortium on Landslides – ICL, the International Association of Landscape Ecology – IALE, International Consortium on Geo-disaster Reduction – ICGdR) and participate in editorial boards of prestigious journals (e.g. Geografiska Analler B: Human Geography, Geomorphology, Health & Place, Landslides and Urban Research and Practice).

We encourage both incoming and outgoing mobility of students and staff. We aim to strengthen the international environment at the institute by welcoming international academics and talented international students in the STARs program as well as in degree programs in English and Czech.

Current internationalisation at the Geographical Institute

Research teams of the Geographical Institute or their members collaborate on international projects funded by the European Commission (H2020 – e.g. project projekt PULCHRA: Science in the City: Building Participatory Urban Learning Community Hubs through Research and Activation, Erasmus+ KA2, Erasmus+ international credit mobility), by other international (UNFPA – UN Population fund, COST) and domestic grant agencies (OP VVV, program INTER-EXCELENCE of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport of the Czech Republic, Inter-Transfer, Czech Grant Agency international projects). We participate in international collaboration on other projects with partners from Europe, USA and other world countries. We are also active in the 4EU+ Alliance supported in the European Universities call of the European Commission which strives to support research-based education. Two projects with PIs based at our institute were successful in the pilot call for collaboration supported by the Charles University: Landcover monitoring with emphasis on vegetation under the climatic change pressure using multitemporal and multisource remote sensing data fusion led by Dr Potůčková from Department of Applied Geoinformatics and Cartography and Impact of climate change on the environment – research and education by Prof Vilímek from Department of Physical Geography and Geoecology.

The research teams at the Geographical Institute participate at a number of international agreements like Earth Observation Capacity Building for Baltic Countries and Eastern Europe (ESA), International agreement with experts from University College London (UCL) and University of Coimbra, inter-departmental agreement with Earth Sciences Department at the University of Firenze, Memorandum of collaboration with Taskhkent State Economic University. Geomigrace research team is an institutional member of IMISCOE Network, Europe's largest interdisciplinary research network in the field of migration, integration and diversity studies. We also collaborate on Erasmus+ programs thanks to which new international mobility agreements were signed in 2018.

Academics and researchers from the Geographic Institute participate in international study programs, for instance through the European Space Education Resources Office (ESERO CZ) and being an associated partner of the international study program 4Cities focused on urban studies. Our staff partake in organisation of and lecturing at international summer schools in Prague and abroad and on organisation of international conferences. We are involved in other international professional activities and education, publish in international scientific journals and in international teams of co-authors. Our students and staff are encouraged to participate in short- and long-term international mobility to partner institutions. The Institute of Geography enjoys visits of international teachers and is a popular destination of international student mobility who can get involved in activities organised by the local students associated in Erasmus Club and in the local EGEA entity.
