Dr. Ivan Kupčík has died...

RNDr. Ivan Kupčík, a historical cartographer focusing on the history of cartography in the Czech lands and the Central European region, and a former curator of the CU Map Collection, has died in the age 78. Honor his memory!

RNDr. Ivan Kupčík  (*1.4.1943 – †3.3.2022)

 

RNDr. Ivan Kupčík was born on April 1, 1943 in Pardubice. He studied at the Faculty of Science of Charles University at the Department of Cartography and Physical Geography, which he completed in 1972 by defending his diploma thesis Czech and Slovak Official Cartography 1914-1945. He worked in the Department of Cartography of the Institute of Geography of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences and in the Department of Historical Geography of the Institute of Czechoslovak and World History of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. In the years 1971-1978, Dr. Kupčík worked as the curator of the State Map Collection. He then emigrated to Germany. From 1980 he worked at the Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv in Munich. In 1993-2006 he also lectured on historical cartography at the Faculty of History and Art History of the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich.

 

Scientific and publishing activities

RNDr. Kupčík was an expert on the history of thematic maps, iconography and portolan maps, and the history of the so-called pilgrimage maps. He was the author of a number of professional historical-cartographic publications, such as Alte Landkarten (Hanau, 1989), artes géographiques anciennes (Paris, 1981), Portolánový atlas Jaume Olivese (1563) ve Vědecké knihovně  Olomouc (Olomouc, 2010). He worked as a correspondent for the journal of International Society for the History of Cartography "Imago Mundi", where, among other things, he published an article about the Map Collection (Imago mundi, vol. 35/1983, pp. 103-104). He also worked for the international organization Bibliographia Cartographica.
