Days of Geography 2021 in The Geographical Library

This year, the Days of Geography will take place in the week from 15 to 19 November. In cooperation with the Map Collection, we have prepared the following program for visitors:

 

1) The Exhibition - The Institute of Geography 1920-1940: they were the first

- where - foyer of the Map Collection, 2nd floor (Albertov 6, Prague 2)

- when - Monday 15 November 2021 to Friday 19 November 2021 (8 a.m. to 6 p.m.), free entry

The exhibition deals with the beginnings of research and teaching of geography at the Faculty of Science, Charles University. It represents 20 prominent personalities who have fundamentally influenced the direction of the field and the entire generation of students of geography. In addition to 60 original documents, visitors can view wall photographs of three interwar deans of Charles University, the globe of the company Jan Felkl and son modified by Stanislav Nikolau in 1921 or the construction of the building in Albertov and copies of old maps from the Monumenta cartographica Bohemiae edition. 

 

2) The presentation of the book Conflict Regions of the World - Europe

The new series Conflict Regions of the World deals with selected conflicts and other political issues in different parts of the world. The part devoted to Europe focuses on three regions with specific political issues, which, however, combine manifestations of nationalism and geopolitics. The text is intended for students and teachers of secondary schools, as well as for all those interested in political geography and current political events in general.

 

3) Georeferencing of old maps in the Library of Geography

- where - Library of Geography, 2nd floor (Albertov 6, Prague 2)

- when - Thursday 18 November 2021 (1 p.m. – 3 p.m.)

Join the Staremapy.cz project. Compare territory changes over time with a web app that works by simply marking the same location on an old map in one and a current map in the other half of the screen. More instructions here (in CZ).

 

4) Guided tours of the Map Collection

- where - Main Hall of the Map Collection, 2nd floor (Albertov 6, Prague 2)

- when - Friday 19 November 2021 (10–10,45 a.m. and 12–12,45 p.m.) - The capacity of the tour is limited to 15 people. PREVIOUS RESERVATION REQUIRED via e-mail jakub.jelen@natur.cuni.cz

The Kuchař Gallery of Cartography presents key works from the collection and also introduces the main European schools of cartography. Visitors will see the oldest maps of the Czech lands by S. Münster, globes from the workshop of Jan Felkl, Hollar’s vistas, maps by J. A. Komenský, P. J. Šafařík, J. B. Homann, H. Hondius, A. Ortelius, G. M. Seutter, P. Mortier, G. Delisle, and G. of Tilbury.
