Government Measures No. 1201 in relation to libraries
With effect from 23 November 2020 from 00:00 to 12 December 2020 at 23:59 the Czech government restricts the operation of libraries by prohibiting the disbursement of loans other than pre-ordered loans and their return through dispensing window or contactless.

Exhibition "Institute of Geography 1920-1940: they were the first" has been extended!
The exhibition dealing with the beginnings of geography at the Faculty of Science, which takes place in the building of the Faculty of Science, Charles University, Albertov 6, in the foyer of the Map Collection will run until 31th May 2021. See the article for more information.

Current functioning of the library
Although The Geographical Library is closed (study rooms, access to PCs ...), contactless lending and returning documents in restricted mode is still possible – but only on Wednesdays (9-11 am)!

The Geographical Library is closed since 10.3.2021
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the Geographical Library is closed with effect from today until further notice.

Borrowing books is possible again from Thursday, April 1, 2021!
The limited operation of the Geographical Library's lending services will resume from the next week. Loans can be picked up every Thursday from 9 am to 11 am after prior reservation using the online form (link below) and a subsequent confirmation by email from the library.
The Geographical Library opens April 19th, 2021!
Based on measures of the Task Force of the Faculty of Science, the Geographical Library is again accessible for borrowing documents on a personal basis since Monday, April 19th, 2021. Nevertheless it still operates in a limited mode. You can come to borrow or return books on every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning (9-12 am), but study rooms and PC stations are still not available. All loans of our readers have been extended until April 30th, 2021.

You can come to borrow or return books from Monday to Friday (9 am - 1 pm), but study rooms and PC stations are still not available.

New book about Aretin's map of the Kingdom of Bohemia has been published
In the edition of Monumenta Cartographica Bohemiae, a collective monograph is currently published, dedicated to the life and work of Pavel Aretin of Ehrenfeld, whose map of the Kingdom of Bohemia was printed for the first time in 1619.

Summer closing of the Geographical Library
From July 19th to August 31st, 2021, the Geographical Library will be closed to the public and will not provide any services. There will be undergoing renovations in the library, and during August the entire Charles University will be transitioning to the new platform Alma – an Integrated Library System offered by Israeli company Ex Libris. The system will probably not be available until the beginning of September. So secure your loans on time! It will be possible to return books to the bibliobox in front of the entrance to the library.
Closing of the library system (12.-31.8.2021)
As part of the transition to the new Alma library software, the Aleph integrated library system will be completely locked between August 12th and 31st, 2021. At this time, it will not be possible to work in it at all, including the loan protocol. Both the electronic library catalog (OPAC) and the GEOBIBLINE database will not work (Geobibline will be inaccessible until the end of September). All libraries of the Charles University will be completely closed during this period and will not be able to confirm output sheets to employees.

News from the Central Library of Charles University
IMPORTANT! Before we launch a new platform from September 2021, it is necessary to temporarily close all libraries’ operation at Charles University. The temporary shutdown will take place from 12 to 31 August 2021 inclusive. Data from existing systems will be transferred to the new platform, the system configuration will be finalized, and we will train all CU libraries staff during this period.

NEWS from the Central Library of Charles University - today, the libraries of Charles University started operating in the new library platform Alma. It also includes a new form of the discovery service UKAŽ (ukaz.cuni.cz/en), which replaces and unifies the functions of the original library catalogue (CKIS), the SFX link server and the Ebsco Discovery Service.

Opening Hours in September 2021
Since September 1st, 2021, the Geographical library is fully open again (including study rooms), the opening hours in September are the same as in the examination period.
Closing Day - 28.10.2021
Dear readers, please note that Thursday, October 28, is a public holiday (the Independence Day), so the library is closed. On Friday, October 29, the library will only be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Days of Geography 2021 in The Geographical Library

The Geographical Library will be closed on Friday, February 11, 2022 from 1:00 pm due to the shutdown of ICT services at the faculty. The shutdown will end at about 8 p.m.

Treasures of the Map Collection exhibited again
The exhibition Treasures of the Map Collection, organized by the Map Collection in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic in 2014, was a great success. After being seen as a traveling exhibition in various places in the Czechia, it is possible to see it again in Albertov from January 24 to May 10, 2022 in the foyer of the Map Collection. Come to see!

The annual event of the Czech Cartographic Society will take place in Olomouc on February 25, 2022, this time on the topic of "Cartography and Culture". Everyone interested in maps and culture is welcome!

RNDr. Ivan Kupčík, a historical cartographer focusing on the history of cartography in the Czech lands and the Central European region, and a former curator of the CU Map Collection, has died in the age 78. Honor his memory!

The Live Map Project – Topography of the History of Natural Sciences in the Czech Lands
The purpose of this project is to capture the places of memory present on the Czech Republic territory and connected with science, that are memorialised and fixed in the public space. These include commemorative plaques, memorials, nature or educational trails, expositions in museums, works of art, institutional buildings, etc.

Exhibition The Heritage of lost landscapes of Czechia II
From 17 May to 31 August 2022, the exhibition „The Heritage of lost landscapes of Czechia II“ will take place in the building of the Faculty of Science of Charles University Albertov 6, on the 2nd floor in the foyer of the Map Collection. The exhibition presents the results of a project from the NAKI II programme of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic focused on the documentation and reconstruction of 40 transformed territories or extinct landscapes of the Czech Republic. The processing of sources took place on the basis of geoinformatics, historical and geographical methods. Viewers will get acquainted with the analysis of the area, which will be presented not only with cartographic and visual materials, but also with 3D models.

Virtual exhibition Fortified Landscape - People in the Eastern Giant Mountains 1938
As part of the Giant Mountains Sources/Springs project, which aims to make information sources about the history and cultural memory of the Giant Mountains from the period of Czechoslovakia (1918-1992) available, its authors invite you to visit an online exhibition dedicated to people in the eastern Giant Mountains in 1938.
Opening hours in the summer exam period 2022
In the summer exam period (May 23 - June 30, 2022) the opening hours change only slightly, on Thursdays it is only open until 12 a.m., otherwise everything remains the same.
Opening hours in July and August
During the holidays, the library will only be open every day from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Summer opening hours are shorter due to revisions which the library is legally obligated to perform. Thank you for your understanding and have a nice summer!

The exhibition Prague suburbs: The dynamics of the social environment of a growing metropolis is moving on its way to Albertov!
We invite you to the third stop of the exhibition, which is one of the outputs of the three-year project of the same name supported within the program of applied research and development of national and cultural identity (NAKI II) of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic. The exhibition is devoted to changes in the social environment of the peripheral parts of the dynamically growing metropolis from the period of industrialization to the present. You can visit the exhibition from September 5 to December 5, 2022.

Exhibition "Czech lands in the middle of Europe"
Last week, the National Archives opened an exhibition focusing on themes and historical correlations between the Czech lands and other regions of Europe during the current presidency of the Czech Republic in the Council of the EU, which takes place in the exhibition hall in the archive area in Prague on Chodovec.
300 years of Müller’s map of Bohemia
National Technical Museum prepared exhibition „300 years of Müller’s map of Bohemia“ again. Exceptional set of Müller’s map of Bohemia is one of the most beautiful and most precious maps in our history.

Due to the national holiday, the library will be closed on Wednesday, September 28th.
Students in the Erasmus+ program visited the library
On Tuesday, September 27, the Erasmus club organized the so-called "Orientation day" for foreign students who will spend the coming semester studying geography at our faculty. As part of it, they also visited the Geographical library, where we presented them the history and present of the library, as well as the possibilities we can offer them.
