Demography at Charles University
Principles of demography were presented for the first time during the school year 1899-1900 at the Faculty of Arts in the Institute of Anthropology and Demography founded by Jindřich Matiegka (1862–1943).
Later, the Faculty of Arts was divided into more Faculties including the Faculty of Science (established 1920) where František Jaroslav Netušil (1890–1927) became the first professor of demography.
The greatest importance for the subject of demography; however, is attributed to Antonín Boháč (1882–1950), the Vice Chairman of the National Statistical Office and the Associate Professor of Demography at the Faculty of Science. Antonín Boháč is considered the founder of demography in Czechoslovakia. He promoted demography and raised the awareness of the subject on an international level. His publications were exceptionally extensive and focused in large on the population issues in Czechoslovakia.
Other names worth mentioning are Jaromir Korčák, Václav Sekyra and František Fajfr.
