Letní kurz migrace „Immigration Issues in Czechia and the United States“

The course "Immigration Issues in the United States and (Central) Europe" is running under the UMass Lowell Education Abroad Programs (https://studyabroad.umasscs.net/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&Program_ID=11533) and Faculty of Sciences  teaching programe (https://is.cuni.cz/studium/predmety/index.php?do=predmet&kod=MZ340P48). Usually starts from June the first and is for 3-4 weeks. The First meeting is in G2 room, Albertov 6, at the Faculty of Sciences. The schedule is updated till the beginning of the May.

This is an intensive interdisciplinary summer course for social science students interested in current immigration issues in the United States and Europe. The first two weeks of the program will consist of intensive in-class discussions, lectures, viewing of documentaries, etc. This is a highly interactive course and students will need to do readings outside of class on daily basis in order to be able to participate in in-class discussions. Readings will be provided to students online. Topics will include journeys of migrants from their home countries to their destinations; remittances and their impact on sending communities; transnational nature of modern migration; issues of legality and deportations; acculturation; discrimination, etc. The fourth week is optional for American students, who can provide their practice in NGO´s or other relevant organizations.

The American students will be conducting a research project as part of this course. Charles University students can choose to do this component. Most time spend on the research part will take place in the third week of the course and subsequent writing of the research paper will take place later in the summer. All students will be required to write several short reflective papers during the first two weeks of the course. In addition, their grade will be based on their contribution to class discussions. There will be no oral exam in the end of the course. 
All classes will be conducted in English.
