Talk Title:

The Geopolitics and Gender Politics of International "Assistance" in Afghanistan

Abstract

This talk will provide a geopolitical and geo-historic overview of the various waves of foreign interference in Afghanistan. Over the last decade international military occupations and economic "assistance" have become part of everyday life in Afghanistan. This lecture will illustrate some of the gender politics and geopolitical impacts of these contemporary interventions in Afghanistan.

Background Information

Jennifer FluriJennifer Fluri is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and the Women's and Gender Studies Program at Dartmouth College. Her research area is South Asia, with a focus on international aid/development in Afghanistan. She recently completed a project that examined gender politics and the spatial impacts of the United States-led military, political, and economic interventions in Kabul city and eastern Afghanistan over the last decade. She is in the processes of co-authoring a book on this subject. Her current project examines the use of social media by humanitarian organizations to garner financial support from individual donors.
