The Anne Sleep Award

Awards of up to £3,000 to assist with biological research in the Middle and Far East.

Established by Mrs Ivy Sleep in fulfilment of the wishes of her daughter, Dr Anne Sleep FLS. Awards of up to £3,000 are made at (odd-numbered) two year intervals, to assist one or more scholars to carry out biological research in the Middle or Far East, or similarly for scholars from the Middle or Far East to pursue their own biological research in the UK. Those selected for awards should normally have recently obtained a PhD at a recognised institution and be of the highest academic standing.

  • Proposals are to be no longer than 2 A4 pages including tables and references and should be submitted to the Executive Secretary. There is no standard application form. Illustrations may be enclosed on an additional page.
  • For a proposal to be successful, the topic must be clearly circumscribed and achievable within defined time limits.
  • Proposals must include a realistic budget.
  • Proposals must have well-focused aims and objectives with specific outputs.
  • Proposals showing evidence of collaboration with other individuals and organisations will be favoured.
  • Applications for the award open on 1st March. The deadline is 16th September.

 

The Appleyard Fund

Grants of up to £2,000 supporting research projects in botany or zoology, by Fellows or Associates of the Society.

The Appleyard Fund was established in 1968 from the estate of Percy Appleyard FLS. Currently up to £2,000 is available from which grants are made towards the expenses of research projects in the field of botany or zoology. Fellows and Associates of the Society who are not in full-time employment as biologists can apply. Registered students are not eligible to apply for this award.

  • The fund is administered by a Committee appointed by the Council of the Linnean Society.
  • Applicants must be a Fellow or Associate of the Society.
  • The deadline for applications is 14th September.
  • Applications should consist of an application form together with a one page description of the project, include an estimate of costs and sent to the Executive Secretary.
  • Shortlisted applicants may be asked to provide additional information.
  • All applicants will be informed of the outcome by the end of November.

 

The Dennis Stanfield Memorial Fund

Funding up to £2,000 supporting botanical research on tropical African plants.

Established in 1972 to celebrate the work of Dennis Stanfield in Africa. The award is recognised as a mark of real distinction and takes the form of a sum of up to £2,000 to assist persons of scientific merit to undertake botanical research on tropical African plants.

Awards are made at (even numbered) two year intervals. The recipients are selected by a Committee appointed by Council, chaired by a Secretary and composed of persons having special knowledge of tropical African botany.

  • Proposals are to be no longer than 2 A4 pages including tables and references and should be submitted to the Executive Secretary. There is no standard application form. Illustrations may be enclosed on an additional page.
  • Normally a successful proposal is for basic research in the areas of plant taxonomy and plant ecology.
  • The proposal should have well-focused aims and objectives with specific outputs.
  • The topic must be clearly circumscribed, achievable within defined time limits, and include a realistic budget.
  • Proposals showing evidence of collaboration with other individuals and organisations will be favoured.
  • Applications for the award open on 1st March. The deadline is 16th September.

Percy Sladen Memorial Fund Grants

Grants up to £1000 supporting field work abroad in the earth and life sciences.

Grants for field work abroad (away from your usual country of residence) in the earth and life sciences. Grants are generally for sums of less than £1000.

Funds are not available for further education of any kind, for visits to conferences, for work in institutions or for field work undertaken as part of a dissertation of higher degree. Undergraduate expeditions are also not supported.
