OVERVIEW

The funding activities concentrate basically on German and foreign academics in the fields of historical humanities. Candidates can apply regardless of their nationality and place of work.

Support is primarily provided for the historical humanities, in particular to support research projects in the following fields:

• Archaeology
• Art History
• Historical Islamic Studies
• History
• History of Law
• History of Science
• Prehistory and Early History

Since 2008 the Foundation has also increasingly addressed issues of great relevance to contemporary life and the future, above all as part of its special “Islam, the Modern Nation State and Transnational Movements” and “Security, Society and the State” programmes.

FUNDING

The Gerda Henkel Foundation provides funding and support in the following areas:

Research Grants:

Applications for research projects and research scholarships can be made in connection with the research grant programme. The Foundation’s statutes do not allow the support of studies under PhD level.

PhD Scholarships:

In line with one of the founder’s wishes, a special focus of the Gerda Henkel Foundation is support for up-and-coming scholars. Special attention is made when approving grants to enable qualified young researchers of both sexes to conduct scientific work for a limited period of time and in order to improve their academic training. As part of its Ph.D. programme, the Foundation seeks to promote highly-qualified new academic talent. Only those candidates are considered whose study achievements and exam performances show them to be especially gifted and whose Ph.D. theses can be expected to yield well above-average results. At present, each year about 50 scholarships are awarded.

Special Programmes:

In addition to its regular funding programme, the Foundation also runs special programmes that are limited in time and geared to a specific subject or region. From 2001 to 2010, as part of its East European special programme it thus supported young historians from Russia, the Ukraine, Moldavia and Belorussia, from 2004 to June 2013 researchers and projects in Central Asia. At present two special programmes are running:

• Islam, the Modern Nation State and Transnational Movements
• Security, Society and the State

Scholarship Programme M4HUMAN:

In 2011 and 2012 it launched M4HUMAN (Mobility for experienced researchers in historical humanities and Islamic studies) – an international fellowship programme co-funded by the European Commission with money from the 7th EU Research Framework Programme and its Marie Curie scheme, enabling scientists to make longer research trips abroad.

Fellowships:

In the early years of the Foundation its bodies already sought to support international scientific collaboration. At present, the Foundation teams up with renowned universities to award several fellowships in Great Britain, France, the USA and Germany.
