FACULTY NEWS: ESEH Summer School - The Undesirable: How Parasites, Diseases, and Pests Shape Our Environments

The centerpiece of the summer school’s program will be the presentations of the participants’ projects and subsequent discussion. We will also have a number of other exciting events, including a keynote by the eminent historian of science Soňa Štrbáňová, a field trip, and a writing workshop led by Patrick Kupper, an environmental historian and the winner of the 2013 Turku Book Award.

Quo Vadis Chemie: Bimetallic Nanoclusters as a Unique Catalyst (prof. Hidehiro Sakurai, Osaka University)

Recently we found that the bimetallic alloy nanoclusters exhibited totally different catalytic activity from the original single metal catalysts. These findings strongly suggest us that we have great opportunities to develop the novel reactions, which had never been realized by any types of catalysts, simply through the combination of the metals, as if it were modern alchemy. In this presentation I will demonstrate low-temperature carbon-chlorine bond activation by Au/Pd bimetallic system [1-6] and carbon-fluorine bond activation by Pd/Pt bimetallic system. Lecture takes place on Monday June 20th at 3 pm at Ch-2 Lecture Hall.

Quo Vadis Chemie: Zeolite-templated 3-D graphene-like microporous carbons

The lecture will be held by prof. Ryong Ryoo of KAIST University in Daejeon, South Korea. He is the head of the Center for Functional Nanomaterials. Ryoo has won a variety of awards, including the Top Scientist Award given by the South Korean government in 2005. He obtained the KOSEF Science and Technology Award in 2001 for his work on the synthesis and crystal structure of mesoporous silica. The lecture will take place at Ch2 Lecture Hall on Monday 23th of May, 2 pm.

Stephen Philip Jackson, FRS, FMedSci, (born 17 July 1962 in Nottingham, England) is the Frederick James Quick Professor of Biology and a Fellow of St. John's College, Cambridge. He is a Senior Group Leader and Head of Cancer Research UK Laboratories at the Gurdon Institute, and an Associate Faculty member at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. He is also part-time Chief Scientific Officer for MISSION Therapeutics Ltd. Lecture screening takes place on Thursday, 7th of April at 5 p.m. at The Great Zoological Hall, Vinicna 7.

Quo Vadis Chemie: Microfluidic assays for enhanced biochemical analysis

Microfluidic biosensors have gained considerable attention in recent years, due to their potential to serve as future point-of-care diagnostic tools. However, despite significant technological advancements, achieving clinically-relevant sensitivity in short analysis time remains a major challenge for many applications. In particular, slow reaction kinetics remain a major bottleneck in the analysis of low sample concentrations. The lecture will be held by asst. prof. Moran Bercovici, Israel Institute of Technology.

The first series of Mendel Lectures was in 2003, when it was devoted to the 50th anniversary of the discovery of DNA. Since then, Brno has been visited by 50 scientists, including Nobel Prize winners. Our faculty students can visit sceening of the lectures in the Great Zoological Hall at Vinicna 7. We begin on Thursday 3rd of March with one of the founders of structural biology Michael Rossmann.

Anton Bauer (The Antibody lab, Vienna, Austria): Antibodies - what else?

The faculty audience is welcome to visit a lecture by Anton Bauer - Fotochemie Lecture Hall (Vinicna 7) on Tuesday 1st of March, 4.30 pm. Anton is going to talk about the establishment of a next-generation antibody platform and identification of a product candidate now in clinical trials, antibodies in immunoassays and a diagnostic marker, and their mammalian recombinant protein expression system and its planed use for the production of SIgA antibodies for oral and topical application.
