Lecture: Extracellular vesicles and viruses: close relatives or enemies?

Abstract
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are now at the center of research at different fields of biomedicine since they are considered to be major players in cell-cell communications. Various pathologies are associated with altering EVs. These changes are not only associated with the pathologies but also contribute to the disease development. Numerous data demonstrate an important role of EVs in viral infection, in particular by HIV-1. Recently, it was found that bacteria that constitute our microbiome also produce EVs by which bacteria communicate with host cells. In summary, the progress in understanding mechanisms of interactions of EVs generated both by host cells and bacteria may be translated into new strategies for treating human diseases.
