STARS program is open for applications

Faculty of Science of the Charles University in Prague has launched its program supporting talented PhD research students from all over the world. During the STARS 2018 call, prospective students can apply to PhD research topics announced on the web pages on January 15th, 2018. Deadline for application is March 16th, 2018.

 

What is STARS? 

Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague, is a top-quality centre of research in natural sciences and STARS is its program supporting talented PhD students. The aim of this program is to provide excellent education and an adequate income to PhD students of the Faculty. The STARS program wants to attract the best students from the Czech Republic as well as from abroad. The program has just recently opened 43 new calls in following fields:

 

What do we offer within the STARS program?

All PhD students receive a state-guaranteed scholarship of 6.300,- Czech crowns per month in their first year of study; the scholarship increases slightly (7.600.- + additional 2.000,- once the doctor examination is successfully passed) over the course of 4 years for which it is granted. In addition to the state scholarship, the STARS program students will also be granted the STARS-scholarship of at least 10 000 CZK per month. The STARS-scholarship is guaranteed for 4-year study periode for those students, who will obtain grade "A" (excellent) in regular each-year evaluation. Complete conditions are available here.

Their net income will therefore be at least 16 300 CZK per month (580 Euro).  The remuneration may be further augmented by the project supervisor. The PhD students accepted for the STARS program will work on the selected scientific project under the guidance of the supervisor.

Am I eligible?

The STARS program is open to all applicants who hold a master‘s degree or  equivalent in sciences, medicine, pharmacology and a related field of study. It is also open to students who are in the last year of their studies and will be able to present their degree diploma at the beginning of their PhD study. The candidate should be proficient in English; however, no formal English exam (such as TOEFL) is required.

 

What do I need:

  • CV with indication of education (B.Sc./M.Sc. grades and projects)
  • list of publications
  • current research interests (motivation)
  • technical skills, languages, awards
  • references (e-mail, phone and affiliation of at least two academic referees, who can recommend you for the PhD program application)

 

How can I apply?

You can choose up to three projects (see Open calls) for which you can then apply through an online application form.  Deadline for applications is March 16th, 2018!

Candidates must apply for regular Ph.D. program too!

 

How are candidates selected?

The program is competitive. The supervisors of the individual PhD projects will shortlist eligible applicants, who will then be invited for an interview to be held during the month of March. The exact interview dates will be agreed between the supervisors and the candidates. Based on the interviews, the applicants to whom the scholarship will be offered will be selected in the beginning of April.
