Faculty hosts international open science meeting of the European Pollen Database

The International Meeting of the Open Science Community of the European Pollen Database will be held at the Faculty of Science, Albertov 6, from 1 to 3 June 2022. For the first time in a long time, this meeting will support the community of paleoecologists who are concerned with the long-term evolution of ecosystems and landscapes in relation to climate change and human activities. The lectures (in English only) are open to the public and admission is free, and there will also be an interactive mini-exhibition linking art with microfossils.

The European Pollen Database Conference at the Faculty of Science will become an international networking platform for paleoecology experts. Not only science but also art will be presented. It will emerge as an interface for communication with the public and as a way of teaching for all educational levels. Glass artist Josefína Váchová from the Technical University of Liberec will present glass sculptures of phytoliths. Phytoliths are silicate fillings of all plant cells, which are used to reconstruct vegetation in desert areas. The theme of the conference suggests that pollen will also be on display, both microscopically, in the form of enlarged models from 3D printing and stamps for all of the monuments brought.

Paleontologists today need a large data infrastructure and sophisticated data analysis for their scientific work, made possible, for example, by the global database Neotoma (www.neotomadb.org), which they are involved in developing. Such a large-scale integration of many data series enables the desired interdisciplinary collaboration.

The meeting, supported by the international organization Past Global Changes (PAGES, www.pastglobalchanges.org), will feature a wide range of experts discussing current issues in fields related to global climate change. Participants, particularly students and young scientists, will have the opportunity to take part in a range of educational workshops and panel discussions, as well as the opportunity to present and discuss their research in the form of posters.

The lectures are free and open to the public (in English only), and there will also be an interactive mini-exhibition linking art and microfossils in the Faculty's premises. Not only science but also art will be presented. It will appear as an interface for communication with the public and as a way of teaching for all educational levels.
