LECTURE: Mgr. Pavel Doležal, Ph.D. - Rise and decline of the cellular organelles in unicellular eukaryotes
Rise and decline of the cellular organelles in unicellular eukaryotes.
Unicellular eukaryotes (protists) represent most of the eukaryotic diversity. Numerous life strategies of free living and parasitic protists have been reflected by the structural adaptations of their cells. While some organelles have been reduced or even entirely abandoned, new compartments have been formed across different protist lineages. Our laboratory is mainly interested in the biogenesis of mitochondria in several pathogenic and free-living protists with the emphasis on the protein transport, membrane protein assembly pathways and the organelle dynamics. In addition to species specific attributes related to human and animal health, we endeavour to answer some general questions on the origin of mitochondria and the evolution of the eukaryotic cell. Because the first eukaryote was a protist!
