- Faculty of Science of the Charles University in Prague has launched its program supporting talented PhD research students from all over the world. During the STARS 2018 call, prospective students can apply to PhD research topics announced on the web pages on January 15th, 2018. Deadline for application is March 16th, 2018.

- PhD position in "Evolution of sex chromosomes in squamate reptiles"
- The aim of the project is to examine the evolution of sex chromosomes and their homology based on gene content in selected lineages of squamate reptiles (eg. lizards and snakes). Squamate reptiles possess lineages with either XX/XY, ZZ/ZW or temperature-dependent sex determination. Suitable candidates will be interviewed until March 31th.

- Popular Science: Impressions from an Expedition to Azerbajjan
- I have had the opportunity to join an expedition of researchers from departments of zoology and parasitology of our faculty to Azerbaijan at the end of the June. It was an expedition indeed – for two weeks we explored local nature, places rarely or sometimes never before visited by teams of researchers. The expedition was led by RNDr. Miroslav Švátora, CSc. and from zoology department represented by doc. RNDr. Daniel Frynta, PhD., Milan Kaftan, Mgr. Barbora Kaftanová, Mgr. Zdeněk Lerch and Iveta Štolhoferová, from parasitology department by doc. RNDr. Jan Votýpka, PhD. and Barbora Kykalová.

- Popular Science: How old is too old? Ideal age of parents according to children
- What should be the ideal age of parents at childbirth? Many people deal with the question by starting a family, a team of scientists affiliated to the Department of Demography and Geodemography of Charles University in Prague-Jiřina Kocourková, Boris Burcin and Tomáš Kučera and Hana Konečná from the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences of the University of South Bohemia decided to focus on this topic professionally. A unique feature of this research was the fact that its respondents were children. The team has published the results of their work in Reproductive Biomedicine Online.

- Popular Science: Armed plant pathogens
- Since plants are sessile organisms, it may seem that they are very vulnerable to pathogens and diseases. This could not be further from the truth! All plant populations are constantly threatened by enormous number of different pathogens, but only few plants will show any symptoms or eventually die, because plants have evolved very complex defence. How does it look and how do parasites bypass it? Our biochemists had a look on an example of that.

- Popular Science: Even partial river restoration can help
- Now and in the past, humans mainly try to control river bodies by straightening and fortifying river channels. River network modifications can result in negative impacts, such as extreme floods or droughts, because the water is quickly drained from the basin and not retained in the landscape. There is a degradation of water quality and physical river habitat quality. Milada Matoušková and Kateřina Kujanová from the Department of Physical Geography and Geoecology are concerned about the state of the rivers.

- Garlic is one of the favourite ingredients in within Euro-Asian cuisines, giving food a special pungent, spicy flavor and a bit of sweetness. It is a product also well-recognized for its medical purposes, and already Ancient Egyptians used garlic and onion regularly to promote good health. However, all the goodness brought to a human comes to the death point we try a kiss after a meal full of this ingredient. The garlic breath coming out of the mouth can be unbearable. But what about the regular body odour, mostly of the axillary origin? Every single one of us has some, and it can be perceived by the others either pleasantly or unpleasantly, depending also on person’s diet.

- Popular Science: Does our immune system have the ability to fight off obesity?
- Human adenoviruses are common pathogens that cause mild gastrointestinal, ocular or respiratory symptoms. Infections are commonly observed in young children. One virus from this group, Adenovirus 36, is associated with obesity and antibodies against it are more prevalent in overweight and obese individuals than in normal-weight individuals.

- Ageing or senescence is a natural part of our lives, even though we often try to hide it. First senescence changes start to manifest on the human face as early as at the age of twenty. Knowledge of the facial ageing process can be crucial for face appearance predictions for long-term missing persons.

- Popular Science: Evolution of endosymbiosis in action
- Endosymbiosis is a relationship between two organisms, one of whom lives in a body of the other. Commonly known examples are protozoans and bacteria in the stomach of ruminants, helping them digest cellulose, or bacteria in roots of Fabaceae (such as beans or peas), helping them fix nitrogen. Endosymbiosis is also common between unicellular organisms: in such case, one cell lives in another cell of different species. One of the most important endosymbioses took place in ancient past and as a result, almost all eukaryote cells have mitochondria (“energetic factories of the cell”) and further more green organisms have chloroplasts, intercepting energy of the light and transforming it to the type of energy suitable an organism. A completely new example of endosymbiosis was found by a team of researchers from Universities of Ostrava, České Budějovice, California and Charles University. Faculty of Science of Charles University was represented by doc. RNDr. Jan Votýpka, Ph.D.

- Popular Science: A green parasite of two faces
- The parasitic green alga Phyllosiphon infecting leaves of Araceae was described already in the 19th century and now, more than hundred years later, we seem finally begin to uncover the real diversity and a hint of life strategies of this genus. This is thanks to the work of Kateřina Procházková and her colleagues from the Department of Botany of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the Charles University.

- One of the world’s greatest experts in geobiology and the microbiology of extremophile organisms, Prof. Aharon Oren, Ph.D., from Hebrew University in Jerusalem (and holder of an honorary doctorate from Charles University), will be giving two lectures at our faculty. The first, entitled Life at high salt concentrations: phylogenetic and physiological diversity, will take place on March 16 at 4 p.m. in lecture hall B8 in Viničná 5, while the second, Salt production and microbes: the microbiology of saltern evaporation ponds and microorganisms in ancient halite, will be held on March 21 at 3 p.m. in the Mineralogical Lecture Hall in Albertov 6. We cordially invite all who are interested to attend.

- Jan Suda passed away
- Jan Suda, a world botanist, outstanding teacher, our colleague and friend, passed away at Thursday March 9.
- Gigantic trilobite larvae
- Palaeontologists from the Institute of Geology and Palaeontology have discovered gigantic trilobite larvae in Bohemia that were probably nourished by large yolks. Over 500 million years ago these larvae inhabited seas in high latitudes in the southern hemisphere and their distribution was comparable with that of lecithotrophic larvae of today’s invertebrates.

- Quo Vadis Chemie - Dr. Radim Hrdina: C-H Functionalization Adamantane Derivatives
- Two main approaches to 1,2-disubstituted adamantane derivatives from readily available starting materials (alcohols, carboxylic acids, amines) will be presented: A rhodium acetate catalyzed intramolecular nitrene insertion reaction of sulfonamides and carbamates; and palladium acetate catalyzed arylation/ acetoxylation of C−H bonds. Mechanistic studies of these transformations, postfunctionalizations and application of obtained derivatives will be discussed in detail. The lecture takes place at Ch-2 Lecture Hall on Monday 3rd, 3 pm.

- The Czech-Norwegian Research Programme supported three research projects at the CU Faculty of Science - two in the priority area of the environment, and one in the area of health. The results of the international cooperation were presented during the final conference held on 25 April 2017.

- New ERC Consolidator grant at our faculty!
- Vladimír Hampl and his team at Department of parasitology and BIOCEV gets ERC Consolidator grant! The five-year project "Life without mitochondrion" will examine two potentially amitochondriate lineages by means of genomics and transcriptomics, conduct experiments simulating the moments of mitochondrial loss and try to induce the mitochondrial loss in vitro by knocking out or down genes for mitochondrial biogenesis.
