Dr. Jiri Reif of Institute of Environmental Science was awarded by Marcin Antczak Award

Marcin Antczak Award is a prize for most inspiring ornithological paper of the last year. The candidate can be an amateur or professional scientist up to 37 years old who originates from Poland, the Czech Republic or Slovakia; or can be from any other country if the research upon which the paper is based was carried out in any of the aforementioned countries. The 2015 prize goes to dr. Jiri Reif.

This is an example of excellent study on difficult species in which authors documented strong interspecific territoriality between two nightingale species under a robust experimental design. Moreover, the study has very interesting ecological and evolutionary inspiration. Jiří Reif is first and corresponding author of awarded paper.

Jiří Reif received PhD degree in zoology from the Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic). His thesis concerns the effects of habitat on patterns of bird distribution and abundance in space and time. After obtaining his doctorate in 2008, he gained experience as a post-doctoral researcher during the stays at Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris (France), Johannes Guttenberg Universität in Mainz (Germany) and Daphne, a non-governmental organization in Prague. In 2010 he obtained a position at the Institute for Environmental Studies at Charles University in Prague, where he now works as an associate professor. Jiří has authored or co-authored more than 60 papers in peer-reviewed journals and serves also as a scientific advisor in citizen science projects in Czech Society for Ornithology, BirdLife partner in the Czech Republic. His research focuses on drivers of changes in bird abundance over space and time and also on ecological aspects of speciation in birds. He studies this latter topic using a model system of nightingales (Luscinia sp.) within a team led by his wife Radka Reifová.
