Obituary: professor Jan Buchar (1932–2015)
Jan began his professional life at the Department of Zoology of the Faculty of Sciences, Charles University in Prague in 1954. He served as chair of the Department in 1986–1990.
Since 1958 he focused his research on taxonomy and zoogeography of Palaearctic species of the wolf spiders and the mapping of occurrence of spiders in the territory of the Czech Republic. Jan was an amiable person with a fatherly approach, and has supervised a number of students. He has formed the Czech arachnological school over decades, and his “progeny” has recently established the Czech arachnological society. His knowledge on spiders was summarized in the monograph entitled Catalogue of Spiders of the Czech Republic (2002). Jan remained active until the very last moment of his life.
A memorial service is planned for November 27th, 2015 in Prague.
