Geography in the top 100 Universities of the World

For the third time in the row can be Albertov geography found amongst the world’s best universities according to the QS ranking.

In the latest issue (2014) of the international chart by the British company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking universities according to individual field of knowledge,  Geography from the Faculty of Science on the Charles University has been, for the third time in a row, listed amongst the top 100 science departments.

Another successful department within the scope of the Charles University was, as in the previous year, linguistics, which was listed in the top 100 as well. Within the top 200 were also the Earth and Ocean Sciences, Modern Languages, Philosophy, Pharmacy, Pharmacology and Mathematics. Charles University as a whole moved forward to the 233rd position in this chart including more than 2,800 evaluated institutions.

“Geography at the Faculty of Science of the Charles University is unique thanks to the joint development of all major geographic disciplines. The research and study of Physical Geography, Human Geography, Regional Development, Geoinformatics or  Demography is, in contrast to many universities, here concentrated in one institute. Such complex approach gives us the big advantage in the form of interdisciplinary cooperation and makes us more attractive for the cooperation with the partners abroad. The still growing international character of Geography at Charles University is crucial for us if we want to stand our ground in the competition with the world’s best departments,” notes assoc. Prof. Jakub Langhammer, vice-dean of the Geography Section of the Faculty of Science.

“Recurring appearance amongst the top 100 Universities is an incredible stimulus for everybody whose efforts contributed to this result. At the same time it’s the best recommendation for the applicants, stating that if you want to get the top education in the Geographical fields of study, you can get it at Charles University, Faculty of Science,” adds Langhammer.

The British company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has been engaged in the comparison of world’s universities for ten years. Since 2011 they started with a unique ranking by subject, comparing results in groups of related disciplines. Comparing the results by subject has a bigger informative value than averaged ranking of the whole university. The methodology of evaluating is based on specific evaluating parameters for every field, combining scientometric index and evaluation of selected aspects by a panel of experts.
