Biology


The study programme Biology with the following study branches:

  • Biology

    The BSc. curriculum "Biology" provides a complex education in biology with the necessary basics of chemistry, physics and mathematics. The graduate achieves an extensive erudition both in laboratory and field biology. Her/his integral and thorough biological education lays a solid groundwork for continued study in a large variety of consecutive MSc. curricula focused on biological topics, and also provides the training necessary to obtain adequate positions and jobs in laboratories and institutes of both basic and applied biological, biomedical and pharmaceutical research. Moreover, graduates acquire a solid understanding of state administration (conservation issues, biological monitoring), natural history museums, botanical and zoological gardens, etc.
  • Ecological and Evolutionary Biology

    The bachelor graduate of Ecological and Evolutionary Biology is capable of standard field and theoretical ecological analyses of populations and communities, as well as quantitative interpretations of ecological data. The graduate is prepared for the subsequent study in Biology and related fields. At the same time, he/she should assert in scientific institutions of basic and applied research, in museums, zoological and botanical gardens, as well as in non-governmental and private sector dealing with ecological biology and biodiversity studies (e.g. nature protection, water quality management, environmental revitalisations, animal breeding).
  • Biology Oriented at Education (two-subjects)

    The graduate has gained a fundamental expertise in individual fields of biology. He/she is capable of continuing in the respective Master's studies. The graduate may employ his/her earned qualifications in institutions providing training and education, with the option of being an assistant teacher.

Special Chemical and Biological Programmes


Study programme Special Chemical and Biological Programmes with the following study branch:

  • Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Organisms

    The graduate has received a broad education in experimental biology, biochemistry and biomedicine, as well as an extended foundation in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. This type of interdisciplinary training gives the graduate a good background for further studies for the Master's Degree in various branches of experimental biology. It also enables the graduate to easily find employment with laboratories carrying out basic or applied scientific research, as well as at those in the medical, agricultural, food and chemical industries. Further employment possibilities are in public administration wherever sophisticated instrumentation handling skills are required, e.g. in environmental or GMO monitoring, or in sanitation.

Chemistry


The study programme Chemistry with the following study branches:

  • Chemistry

    Graduates have received an exhaustive university-level education in the following chemical disciplines: inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, organic chemistry, macromolecular chemistry, nuclear chemistry and biochemistry. The bachelor's degree earner will be sufficiently educated even in mathematics, physics and computer science. The practical skills of a bachelor's degree earner are guaranteed by his/her passing through a Practical laboratory training course in all chemical disciplines. The choice among numerous required and elective subjects enables the bachelor's degree holder to acquire an appropriate education, either for continuing in a specialised master's degree program or for entering the workforce, namely in chemical laboratories performing basic and applied research.
  • Environmental Chemistry

    The graduate has received a university-level education in the chemical disciplines, namely inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, organic chemistry, nuclear chemistry and biochemistry, and also in general biology, ecology, physics and computer science. Practical laboratory training guarantees that the bachelor's degree holder has practical skills for solving various problems in the field of environmental chemistry. The bachelor's degree holder has acquired appropriate knowledge that enables him to work in laboratories and environmental departments of industrial and agricultural enterprises or in environmental sections of administrative bodies. The education he receives provides him with the necessary foundation for continuing in a master degree course of Environmental chemistry.

The bachelor's study program is, above all, the first stage in achieving the full qualification (M.Sc.) required for teaching at high schools. Biochemistry


Study programme Biochemistry with the following study branch:

  • Biochemistry

    The graduate has acquired basic theoretical knowledge and practical skill in the main biochemical and molecular biological fields. Graduates find employment in research laboratories of various scientific institutions and universities. Moreover, they can work in clinical laboratories of medical facilities, in various pharmaceutical institutions and in environmental control laboratories. Some of them continue in an Extended Master's Degree study program either in our republic or abroad.

Clinical and Toxicological Analysis

Study programme Clinical and Toxicological Analysis with the following study branch:


  • Clinical and Toxicological Analysis

    Graduates of the BSc program in Clinical and Toxicological Analysis find employment primarily in laboratories, on production lines and in control departments of industrial institutions, offices and public management organs. They head research, production, commercial or administrative teams observing good laboratory practices.

Geology


Study programme Geology with the following study branches:

  • Geology

    A graduate is able to study and document the rock environment, its geological structure and parameters, its interaction with the atmo-, hydro- and biospheres, and the processes of migration of components through environments. He/she gains information on protecting components of the natural environment (water, atmosphere, rocks), works with scientific data (geological, hydrological, climatic, environmental), documents field work, finds data in archives, and processes, validates and interprets all data obtained. He/she can prepare reports of research teams from geological surveys and other research institutions, in surveying and field exploration organizations (protection and exploitation of natural resources and water, solving engineering-geological and geo-technical problems) and in management and administration at all levels.
  • Applied Geobiology

    The graduates acquire basic knowledge and practical skills in those aspects of Earth and life sciences which are focused on evolution of ecosystems in the Earth history and the mutual interactions of the geosphere and the biosphere. The bachelor grade enables work in institutions dealing with collections and organization of scientific data and material, and in popularization of sciences and public relations (museums, public administration, educational institutions, editorial houses or media, non-governmental organizations), in private sectors in companies specialized in environmental problems and ecotourism. The bachelor grade also enables to continue in study (magister stage) mainly of the Earth and life sciences.
  • Geotechnology

    The graduate has interdisciplinary natural scientific and technical expertise with emphasis on hydrogeology, engineering geology and applied geophysics including information technology necessary for processing acquired data. He is capable of using modern equipment for laboratory and field work as well as complex geophysical surveying techniques. He is trained for various jobs in the frame of geological engineering and geotechnical surveys, water management and hydrogeology and geological, geophysical and environmental tasks. He is fit for applied research and legislative activities in offices of various levels. A possibility of continuation in a follow up master degree in Applied Geology is a feasible option.
  • Management of Natural Resources

    Graduates have a fair knowledge of geology, environmental protection, protection of the rock environment, exploitation of mineral resources and waste management. They are acquainted with legal aspects of environmental protection. The graduate will be capable of assessing the value of individual mineral resources and their deposits, know the methods of their exploitation, be very knowledgeable about basic mining and mineral processing methods, and be able to monitor exploitation and continuously assess ecological burdens and impacts on the environment. Graduates are suited for positions in state administration, the public-service sector and private companies involved in environmental protection and exploitation of mineral resources.

Study programme Geography with the following study branches:

Geography Oriented at Education (one-subject)

  • Geography and Cartography

    It is presumed that most of the graduates will continue in their studies within the framework of the relevant master´s programme (physical geography and geo-ecology, social geography and regional development, regional and political geography, cartography and geo-informatic, environmental studies, geology) or will work as specialists in state administrative bodies or in ministry research institutes. Graduates of the bachelor's programme can continue in the master´s teaching education programmes as well.
  • Physical Geography and Geoinformatics

    Graduates of the Physical Geography and GeoInformatics bachelor study programme are prepared to work both in the private sector and in research within a wide variety of specialisations in the following fields: physical geography, landscape ecology, environmental studies, geoinformatics, and cartography. They are familiar with basic methods used in the individual disciplines of physical geography, including field and laboratory research. They are able to fully make use of geographic information systems and selected methods of remote sensing, statistics and geo-statistics, and to create high-quality cartographic output. They are capable of both individual work and multi-disciplinary teamwork and can solve partial and complex tasks, as well as keep improving their professional qualifications.
  • Social Geography and Geoinformatics

    Graduate Bachelor's degree in Social Geography and Geoinformatics acquired during their studies extensive knowledge and skills in a wide range of social and geographic geospatial disciplines. Graduate master the basics of scientific work, can work critically with literature, statistical data and maps. His skills in working with maps and GIS applications, the analysis of collective and individual spatial data enable it to handle different types of professional studies aimed at assessing the socio-economic activities in the landscape. After the bachelor's degree is prepared to continue in the master study. In practice it may be applied as a specialist in public administration and in business. Is well placed to work in the field of regional development and spatial planning.
  • Geography Oriented at Education (one-subject)

    Graduates can use their acquired education in a wide range of professions, e.g. in organisations aimed at further education, various media and publishing houses, tourism, guide services, administration of municipalities, towns and regions; and others. Most graduates are presumed to proceed with one of the continuing master's programmes in geography.

Study programme Demography with the following study branches:

  • Demography and Social Geography

    A graduate of the joint Bachelor's program Demography and Social Geography is trained in the methods and principles of demographic analysis that enable him/her to investigate and evaluate population changes in the Czech Republic or in other countries. The study of additional interdisciplinary subjects facilitates assessing the broader social and economic context of population phenomena. A graduate of the joint Bachelor's program in demography may further pursue subject-related study towards a Master's degree. Should the graduating student choose not to continue towards a Master's degree, he or she may choose from a wide range of social, economic or health employment opportunities in the Government, in a statistics bureau, and in the administration or human resources departments of larger corporations.

Ecology and Environmental Protection


Study programme Ecology and Environmental Protection with the following study branch:

  • Environmental Protection

    Graduates find jobs in national, regional and local environmental administration, in the private consultancy sector and in basic and applied research. They are also qualified to participate in projects aimed at environmental and resource management, environmental contamination, nature conservation, waste disposal, waste water treatment and environmental health. Typically, they act as team members and expert assistants in the above-mentioned subjects.

Bioinformatics


Study programme Bioinformatics with the following study branch:

  • Bioinformatics

Graduate gets to know the basic theories and methodological approaches in mathematics, informatics and biology. Graduate can synthetize the facts from biology and informatics and apply them on „real-world“ cases. Graduate has also basic knowledge of handling of relevant machines and tools. Graduate is well-prepared for following Master degree study of bioinformatics or related subjects. Graduate can also work on a position that requires analytical skills such as a programmer, an analyst of information systems, a financial analyst etc. Graduate can be also employed in a laboratory (diagnostic or scientific) as a technician.

Earth Sciences


Study programme Earth Sciences with the following study branch:

  • Earth Sciences

The graduate is educated in the disciplines of Earth Sciences, has broad theoretical knowledge and is capable of practical applications in the fields of geology, geography and the environment. (S)he is capable of finding and processing information in a number of fields of geology, geography, the environment, hydrology and hydrogeology, pedology, etc. (S)he is capable of planning professional and applied geological work and of dealing with environmental problems. Because of broader and more general nature, people graduating from this program have a greater choice in selecting a master’s study programme and are able to continue their studies in Geology, Geography, Environmental Sciences and Environmental Chemistry at the Faculty of Sciences of Charles University or other faculties with suitable certified master’s programmes.

 

Hydrology and Hydrogeology


Study programme Hydrology and Hydrogeology with the following study branch:

  • Surface and Underground Water

The graduate has interdisciplinary knowledge of basic sciences and geosciences with an emphasis on the occurrence, circulation, contamination and surface and underground water protection. Understands the basics of disciplines necessary for understanding, analysis and interpretation of the processes and mechanisms related to the occurrence and circulation of water in the landscape, and its anthropogenic influence. Has practical knowledge of modern research methods and geoinformation technologies, and skills to use modern devices for laboratory and field research.
The graduate is able to solve independently basic analytical tasks in the field of water management and to solve specialized technical works within hydrological and water management studies, including projects dealing with water resources protection.
