Czech scientific hopes scored in LuxembourgThe European Olympiad of Experimental Sciences (EOES), in which the best teams of young high school students from the European Union and Ukraine compete, took place this year in Luxembourg. With the participation of mentors from the Czech national rounds of the Olympiads (most of them from the Faculty of Science of Charles University), the Czech high school students brought home gold and silver medals. Volcanic craters are not as “sleepy” as scientists thoughtThere is a hypothesis that says that after a major volcanic eruption, it takes a long time for a new one to form. It doesn’t always have to be the case though. A new study published in a prestigious scientific journal Nature Geoscience shows that volcanic craters are able to produce a large amount of material even relatively shortly after a major eruption. The first humans came to Europe 1.4 million years agoThe oldest currently known human occupation of Europe lies near the town of Korolevo in western Ukraine. New findings by an international team led by Roman Garba from the Nuclear Physics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Institute of Archaeology of the CAS, Prague, have confirmed that the lowermost layer with the stone tools at Korolevo dates to 1.4 million years ago. Until now, the earliest inhabited location was thought to be Atapuerca in Spain, some 200,000 to 300,000 years later. The results, published in Nature, also show that early hominins took advantage of warm interglacial periods to colonise Europe from the east or southeast. A recent advance in mathematical modelling combined with applied nuclear physics has enabled the precise dating of the Korolevo’s earliest occupation. Our faculty succeeded in the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral FellowshipThe LeishBlock project will be led by Dr. Andreia Albuquerque-Wendt, who will spend 2 years at the Swiss Tropical And Public Health Institute and then 1 year at our faculty, where her postdoc supervisor will be Professor Petr Volf from the Department of Parasitology. Single-atom engineering revolutionizes medicine, chemistry and energyNew materials for energy acquisition and storage, nano-robots detecting or eliminating germs in the human body or substances accelerating and streamlining a number of chemical reactions in industrial production will be developed by a revolutionary method of single-atom engineering as part of the Technology Beyond Nanoscale (TECHSCALE) project. Palacký University (UP) has succeeded in the prestigious Excellent Research call in the Jan Amos Komenský Operational Programme, with partners from Charles University and CEITEC-VUT.
