Worldwide important meeting of plant biologists is ongoing in Prague

A remarkable meeting of plant biologists „Plant Biology Europe EPSO / FESPB Congress 2016“ with European and worldwide importance is taking place in Prague during 26-29 June, 2016. More than 900 scientists from 58 countries of the whole world participate in this event. The aim of the PBE Congress is development of discussion on current challenges of plant biology of the 21st century.

An important issue of the congress is information about finishing sequenation of pea genome in a year of 150th anniversary of publishing of turning work of Gregor Mendel on pea hybridization, which belongs to the establishment of new plant genetics.

The main theme of the PBE Congress is finding answers to questions, which are connected with a key role of plants in solution global problems, human population faces now. In the process of photosynthesis, plants are using energy of sun irradiance for biomass formation, which then serves as a source of food for all other organisms of Earth including human beings. „Congress is aimed on contribution to solution of problems connected with food securit on Earth, preserving stability of composition of the atmosphere, which determines existence of life on Earth in its current forms, and preserving ecosystem functions and services during ongoing long-term climate change“, says Professor Jana Albrechtová, a President of the Plant Biology Europe EPSO / FESPB Congress 2016.

Large time will be devoted to discussssion on development of plant biotechnologies for food safety and effective use of plants for production of biofuels for future generations. Discussion is also directed to a strategy of science policy and transfer of scientific knowledge on plants to politicians ans and wide public.

EPSO is an independent academic organisation that represents more than 226 research institutes, departments and universities from 30 countries in Europe and beyond. FESPB is Federation of European Scieties on Plant Biology. It is a great honour for Czech plant science that Czehc society for Experimental Plant Biology was put in charge of congress organization. The Congress Presidents are prof. Jana Albrechtová from the Faculty of Science of Charles University in Prague and Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (ASCR) ane Professor Jiří Šantrůček from the University of South Bohemia and Biological Centre of ASCR. Jana Albrechtová is a professor of plant anatomy and physiology at the Department of Experimental Plant Biology of the Fac. Sci., Charles Univ., and works also in the Institute of Botany of ASCR. She has been for a long-term period serving as a President of the  Czech Society for Experimental Plant Biology (CSEPB) and for two year a President of The Federation of European Societies of Plant Biology (FESPB). Jiří Šantrůček is a professor of plant anatomy and physiology and the Head of the Department of Experimental Plant Biology at  the University of South Bohemia and works also in the Biological Centre of ASCR. He has been a long-term Vice-President of the CSEPB.
